Don't Cancel That Class! Program While planning your syllabi and working around your conference schedules, you don't need to cancel a class. We are ready and willing to visit your classroom to facilitate a standard or customized workshop to match individual class needs and assignments, for the days you need to be away. Choosing a Major Studies show that people are more successful and satisfied in jobs and career fields consistent with their skills, values, interests, and personality traits. Gathering information about these qualities is called self-assessment. We have many resources that can help students select a major that matches their self assessment. Click here to learn more. Referring students to the Career Development Center We invite all students, undergraduate and graduate level, in all majors and academic programs to use our services. Referring classes or groups to the Career Development Center for assignments If you wish to refer a group of students to the Career Development Center, whether for individual appointments, walk-in advising or for visits related to class assignments (mock interviews, CDC tour, SIGI 3), please call us first, at least two weeks in advance, to discuss your goals and needs and the number of students involved. How to get experience through Internships and Cooperative Education The Career Development Center subscribes to four online internship databases that lists local, regional, national and international internship opportunities in a variety of fields. In addition to your network of internship sites, please encourage students to check out these databases, as well as our Search Job / Internship Listings web page. Black Executive Exchange Program BEEP is the National Urban League's oldest signature program." The mission of BEEP is to share learning experiences across generations, cultivate new leaders and inspire achievements beyond the possible through committed involvement and operational excellence." BEEP supports HBCUs by providing business faculty with contacts, structured workshops, and counsel that help to enrich the campus curriculum. Additionally, the schools benefit from interaction with the business community, its managers, career opportunities and in-kind resources. Students are sponsored to the leadership BEEP conference which is a four-day, activity-enriched program where students evaluate their leadership and personality styles through the use of self-assessment tools, intense workshops and interaction with African-American executives and their student peers. BEEP at Bowie BEEP at Bowie usually consists of a day of classroom visits followed by seminars or workshops facilitated by BEEPers. This year's BEEP program will be held on TBD. What Can I Do with This Major? Wondering how to connect majors to careers? This website provides typical career paths associated with majors, employers that hire people with degrees in the major, strategies job seekers can do to maximize their chances of being hired, and lists of websites that provide additional information. Career Guides & Handouts The center maintains a supply of handouts written by our staff for use as quick self-help tools by students who are career planning or job searching. Faculty and staff can request multiple copies of these handouts. Click here to view and/or download our career handouts. Where Are the Jobs? This is our specialty! If you find students who are concerned about any aspect of their job search, please refer them to us. We can help them locate jobs, create resumes and cover letters, prepare for interviews, register for upcoming job fairs, and connect with employers coming to campus. Students access the system to sign up for events, upload resumes and cover letters, search for jobs and internships, and view career advice videos and handouts. Graduate School Preparation The Career Development Center has resources that can help students identify programs that match their interests, prepare for entrance exams, and create admissions essays and personal statements. During the academic year, we offer practice exams, sponsor special workshops on the graduate school admission process, and bring a variety of schools to campus via our Graduate & Professional School Fair and information tables.
Employer Relations Each year BSU students and alumni can participate in many on and off-campus events which will enhance and enrich their academic experience and connect them with employers and professionals in their career field. We can also share employer and alumni contacts specific to your department, coordinate meetings between faculty and employers interested in recruiting students from your academic discipline, and distribute internship listings specific to your department. Faculty Liaison Program The primary goal of this program is to build a stronger relationship between the Career Development Center and BSU faculty members.The program consists of one Faculty Liaison for each of the academic areas, serving as the CDC's primary contact for disseminating relevant career information (event and job announcements) for a given discipline. In turn, the Faculty Liaision is responsible for forwarding this career information to his or her colleagues and to students within his or her respective academic areas.
