Update on Influenza A Outbreak

As of 5:30 p.m. on September 11, there have been 4 confirmed cases of Influenza A on campus and 14 cases of influenza like illnesses.  But for the majority of cases, the illness has been mild with fever, chills, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose.  Most cases seem to be recovering within 4-7 days.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations are for sick students with mild symptoms to go home with parents. Moreover, sick students should practice cough etiquette, such as covering mouth while coughing, washing hands frequently, and using hand sanitizer frequently.

Warning signs: If students experience shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chest pains, dizziness or confusion then they should seek medical attention immediately.

Do not panic, the most important intervention is education and good hygiene.  We will notify you via the H1N1 Updates website regarding any additional changes to our strategy to prevent the spread of flu on Bowie State's campus.  If you have questions, please contact the Wellness Center at 301-860-4170.
