Bowie's State University Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention Center was established in May 1998 by the Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration for the following purposes:

  • To reduce binge drinking on campus
  • To provide research-based information about the nature, scope, and consequences of students’ use of alcohol and other illicit drugs
  • To implement the use of a science-based peer education model to educate students about alcohol and drug use and consequences associated with misuse
  • To train students to become Nationally Certified Peer Educators
  • To identify the link between serious problems and alcohol, i.e., poor academic performance, vandalism, violence, dropouts, date rape, and death.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) Prevention Center is to promote healthy behaviors and to reduce risky behaviors related to alcohol, substance use, and HIV/AIDS through prevention education and training in an effort to promote the personal and academic development of the student.
