Created in 1996, the Office of Commuter Affairs and Community Services was formed to increase the involvement of and services to the commuter population of Bowie State University. The commuter population consists of 85% of the total population of the University.

The Office of Commuter Affairs and Community Services provides programs and services that directly address the needs of commuter students.

Programs

Good Morning Commuters

The primary goal of this program is to meet and discuss commuters' concerns with other students, staff, and administrators.

Commuter Awareness Week

The goals of Commuter Awareness Week are to make commuter students’ needs more visible and to remind the University community of commuters’ concerns.

Night Class Socials

This program gives students the opportunity to eat a healthy snack before evening classes and learn about campus programs and opportunities.

Commuter Appreciation Banquets

This bi-annual program culminates the end of each semester by acknowledging commuter students, student organizations, and faculty and staff for their outstanding accomplishments in servicing the commuter affairs community.

Off Campus Housing

The Office of Commuter Affairs and Community Service provides an Off Campus Housing Listing for students looking for housing off campus.  If you are currently a Bowie State University Student and are looking for housing please contact the Office of Commuter Affairs and Special Programs at 301-860-3809 or 301-860-3835.  You may also contact us by email at sglaster@bowiestate.edu.  Our online housing database is currently being updated and will be available soon.  

In addition we also provide the opportunity for individuals to list available housing/properties on our current database. Below is a brief list of some of the services offered in the Office of Commuter Affairs and Community Services:

  • Provide new listing for off-campus housing. 
  • Provide apartment locator information
  • Provide Metro/MARC schedule information
  • Provide maps of the University
  • Answer inquiries in relating to commuter meal plan and commuter lounge
  • Provide AAA information as needed
  • Provide on-campus programs for commuters
  • Provide shuttle van transportation on holidays
  • Provide information pertaining to local community service opportunities and keep record of all programs sponsored by campus groups and organizations
  • Maintain database of commuter students’ email addresses in order to disseminate pertinent information relating to programs
