Student Name: Martena Reed Hometown: Lansing, Michigan Classification: Senior Major: Social Work High School Attended: Waverly High School What made you choose to attend Bowie State University? I was sure that I wanted to attend an HBCU for my undergraduate academic career. When I was applying to colleges, I considered majoring in education and I researched Bowie State University and learned that it had been a school for teachers. How does it feel to be a student representative for the National Association of Social Work, DC Metro Chapter? I am very excited to be able to impact change on a large scale. When I first learned that I was elected for the position I told several professors and my field instruction supervisor. Everyone else seemed to be more excited for me than I was for myself. I think the position is much more important than I realized. It took me some time to realize that I was on the board of a national organization. What made you choose your major as a field of study? I developed an interest in psychology. I was interested in learning more about human thoughts and behaviors. I wanted to have a positive impact on the lives of others, but I was not ready to make a commitment to obtaining the terminal degree for psychology. Social work seemed to be the best of both worlds. Now that I've gained more insight into the social work field, I've become more interested in social policy and research. Are there any campus activities or organizations that you are involved in? Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society, President Elect of Alpha Chi National Honor Society, Phi Alpha Honor Society and BSU Social Work Club Please tell us some interesting things about yourself? I enjoy reading and writing. Writing helps me to cope with whatever stress, anger, or frustration that I am experiencing. Usually I write to clear my mind and release thoughts; then I end up throwing the paper away or losing it. I am obsessed with organization. I have several binders, magazine files, and containers around my room to remain organized. However, I'm not sure that I've been successful at maintaining my organization. Describe your experience at BSU? My experience at BSU has been positive. I have had the opportunity to learn from great professors who are truly interested in seeing me excel. I have enjoyed being a part of discussions with my peers, hearing others perceptions of various issues, and being a part of the BSU campus. What are your career aspirations? I am still figuring out what my career aspirations are. I do know that I want to perform policy analysis, social program evaluation and research. I just have to determine the career track that will allow me to do all or most of those things.
