IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 16, 2011 CONTACT Cassandra Robinson University Relations and Marketing 301-860-3505 Bowie State University Event Offers Information and Service for Area Homeless (Bowie, Md.) Bowie State University's Human Resources Development (HRD) Program will shine a light on the changing face of homelessness in Prince George's County and empower women in transition at local shelters to take control of their situation on Saturday, Aug. 20, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. in the Thurgood Marshall Library Special Collections Room. "When you lose your home you don't know what to do. There is no roadmap to guide you to the services that are available for help," said Dr. Wendy Edmonds, a professor of the HRD program. "This program is an effort to support our community in reaching out to the women forced into the ever increasing homeless population and those who want to be a source of support." The program, "A Celebration of Women in Transition," will feature discussions that raise the awareness of the growing homeless problem and the array of services offering training and development that empower individuals with housing needs to improve their circumstance. Highlights of the program will include panel discussions with women in transition sharing their personal experiences with homelessness; and sharing their experience of triumph through entrepreneurship and advocacy. The program will benefit churches, community organizations and individuals who care about helping families in crisis. Homeless services provider will be on hand to offer guidance and resources to help women learn to navigate the process and receive assistance. Thirty women from shelters in Landover, Capital Heights and Washington, DC have been invited as special guests for the program and will be treated to an afternoon of pampering makeover and massages, co-sponsored by Rural Technology and Economic Development (RTED) Group. "Our hope is that Bowie State University is acknowledged as a leader in the community using creative measures to end the increasing homeless population," said Dr. Edmonds. # # # Brandon Yancey, a Bowie State University graduate student majoring in organizational communications was a contributing writer for this news release.
