Bowie State University to Host 35th Annual Health Fair
Fair to Feature Free Health Screenings, Tastings and Fitness Demonstrations
(BOWIE, Md.)-Health screenings, fitness demonstrations and healthy cooking tastings are among the various activities attendees can expect at Bowie State University's 35th Annual Health Fair. The event, which is free and open to the general public, takes place Wednesday, April 4, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wiseman Student Center, Room 102, on the Bowie State University campus.
"Our goal with this health fair is to educate and screen people for a wide range of health risks and then connect them with providers who can help manage their particular concern," says Rita Wutoh, MD, director of the Henry Wise Wellness Center. "We want people to pay attention to their bodies. Just because you may feel fine doesn't mean everything is OK."
Individuals can receive free health screenings for various concerns, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, vision and hearing issues, and dental health. Individuals who want to start a fitness program can get a free body fat analysis and participate in exercise demonstrations that emphasize strength training and the latest cardio methods. Healthy cooking demonstrations and tastings are also on the menu of options for fair attendees.
Bowie State began hosting the fair to highlight health issues relevant to the African-American community. Each year the fair draws nearly 250 individuals from the Bowie State community alone. In some instances, fair attendees discovered life-threatening conditions, like high blood pressure, after completing a health screening.
Vendors and health specialists from more than 20 organizations will participate in this year's health fair. Exhibitors include, but are not limited to:
- American Red Cross
- Bowie Pregnancy Clinic
- Center for Infant and Child Loss, University of Maryland
- Community Radiology
- In Step Podiatry Center
- Maryland Insurance Administration
- National Male Minority Health Project
- Prince George's County Health Department
- Special Care Face & Body Wellness Spa
In addition to physical wellness, exhibitors will also provide individuals with information and referrals for services that emphasize other aspects of wellness, including nutritional analysis, mental health counseling, image consultation and career counseling.
