Dear BSU Colleagues and Students:

On April 3-6, 2011, the Bowie State University will host the Middle States On-site Evaluation Team in a decennial review to determine our compliance with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education's Standards of Excellence. Our Middle States Steering Committee and sub-committees have worked tirelessly to prepare us for this comprehensive examination of BSU's educational programs and services. Additionally, the entire University community has been diligent in responding to numerous requests for information and in providing support, wherever needed.

Over the next few weeks, as we bring closure to our Middle States process, I urge you to view our work as a means of reflecting on our achievements of the past ten years and to using the results of this self-study as a roadmap in our continuous pursuit of educational excellence and institutional effectiveness.

During this process, we have been able to document substantially many great accomplishments for which we all should be very proud. We have mapped our future through the revision of University's strategic plan, the development of an Academic Plan and Enrollment Management Plan, and other planning documents that will certainly continue to bring deserved recognition to Bowie State University. Since the last self-study, our enrollment has grown eight percent (8%) and we can boast the expansion of our academic offerings to include two doctoral programs. We have been good stewards of our financial resources as demonstrated by both external and internal audits. By all accounts, we are a vibrant, well-managed campus as documented in our self-study report.

At the same time, our report has shown that there are several areas that will require our attention and full community engagement as we strive to comply with the fundamental elements of the Middle States Standards of Excellence. With your support, I know we will continue to make progress in serving our mission, assessing our performance, while managing our budget challenges.

I am confident that your candor and openness with the Evaluation Team will add significant value to our efforts at BSU, and will help us achieve positive results in Preparing Students for Life Through Institutional Growth and Educational Excellence. Within this context, we ask for your continued support in serving the mission of Bowie State University.

Sincerely,

Mickey L. Burnim

President
