Bowie State University held its 140th Commencement on Dec. 22, 2007, at the Leonidas James Gymnasium on campus. More than 200 students were awarded bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees during the University’s first Winter Commencement to be held in seven years. Dr. Mickey L. Burnim, University president, presided and Gov. Martin O’Malley delivered the commencement address.

The recipient of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, Wole Soyinka, is the guest of honor at Bowie State University's 2007 Spring Arts Festival on April 1, 2007. The event was held in the Myers Auditorium on campus and sponsored by the Departments of English and Modern Languages, Communications, Fine and Performing Arts, and History and Government, as well as the Honors Program. Soyinka enlightens the group on the Nigerian crisis and discusses the complexities and the future of Africa. He also describes his path from imprisonment during the Nigerian civil war to becoming a celebrated poet, novelist, and theater director.

Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley participates in the President's Day Forum, a Black History Month event, at Bowie State University on Feb. 19, 2007. University of Maryland Chancellor William Kirwan speaks on the University System]s “commitment to diversity and inclusion." Also in attendance are U.S. Congressman Albert Wynn, Maryland Department on Aging Secretary Gloria Lawlah, and Maryland state Delegate Tawanna P. Gaines, who discusses "The Need for Diversity and Expanded Access to Higher Education."

The 2006 Prince George's Classic football game attracts students, alumni, staff, and community and business leaders as well as residents of Prince George's County to see the showdown between the Bowie State University Bulldogs and the North Carolina Central University Eagles. While enjoying the game, President Mickey L. Burnim mingles with members of the crowd, including the BSU Bulldog mascot.
