| Bowie State University Furlough Plan ApprovedAs I stated at the opening of the faculty institute in January, 2010 promised to be a year of great challenge. Regrettably, the economic situation for our country and the state of Maryland remains so tight that furloughs are mandated again for our State-funded employees. Bowie State University must reduce its campus salary expenditures by $646,079 to help balance its FY2011 budget. Therefore, we developed a furlough plan for our campus to meet this requirement. Click here to view the university's furlough guidelines. The input we received on the furlough plan from participants in our shared governance process and union leaders was very helpful. Accordingly, the University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor, William E. Kirwan, approved Bowie State University's furlough plan. This year will be challenging as the last couple have been, but we must remember that the state of Maryland is in much better shape than others. Likewise, USM and its employees are better off than other higher education colleagues across the country. Hence, we must pull together to achieve our noble mission in making the world, nation, state and community better. I know that you will join me in giving my very best, under these circumstances, in pursuing our mission and achieving new levels of excellence for Bowie State University. |
