As previously noted, Bowie State University, along with the other institutions in the University System of Maryland, will institute a furlough to lessen the impact of current operating budget reductions. After our Town Meeting, discussions with Staff Council, Faculty Senate, and Union representatives, we developed a Bowie State University Furlough Plan which incorporated feedback received from the various constituencies. The Plan is attached and the furlough days are as follows: Friday, January 9 Tuesday, January 20 February (Floating Furlough Day) Tuesday, March 17 Thursday, May 21 In developing the Plan, we tried to adhere to the following principles outlined in the Board of Regents Resolution: - No more than one furlough day taken in a pay period
- Minimal disruptions to classes and student services
- The Plan must be tiered so that the lower paid employees have fewer furlough days
- Employees cannot be required to work or perform official duties during his/her approved furlough days
Please review carefully the attached Plan for BSU and prepare accordingly. Note also that each employee must have his/her plan to meet the furlough days requirement approved through appropriate channels by their divisional vice president. All furlough days must be taken by May 21, 2009. Feel free to contact Sheila Hobson, senior director of the Office of Human Resources, or Dr. Karl Brockenbrough, vice president for Administration and Finance, should you have any questions in this regard. Thank you so much for your cooperation as we respond to the budget reductions. Furlough Plan Furlough Salary Ranges Furlough Days
