BOWIE, Md. - Robotic programming, virtual reality theme-based gaming, and chemistry in crime scene detective work are just a few of the activities students will participate in at Bowie State University's exhibition booths at the 2nd Annual USA Science and Engineering Festival. Set for April 28-29, 2012 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., the festival is the largest celebration of science in the country with over 3,000 fun, interactive exhibits.
Students and faculty from the Departments of Natural Sciences and Computer Science at Bowie State University (BSU) will be showcasing these hands-on demonstrations as a part of their "STEMing the Tide" presentations to promote education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
"These kinds of activities are geared towards promoting science among the youth," said Dr. George Acquaah, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The BSU booths will present fun and engaging activities students can participate in to learn more about the Bowie State STEM programs and how STEM affects our daily lives. Students will learn how computers play an important role in fashion and art and how robotic machines help solve problems that are inhospitable for humans. BSU's participation in the festival will highlight Bowie as a provider of high quality STEM education.
"Many people don't know Bowie as a research institution; they know Bowie as a teaching institution," said Acquaah. "This gives us the opportunity to showcase something of what we are doing in the area of research and particularly how we use research to teach students."
BSU will have information on hand about the 2012 BSU STEM Summer Camps where students will work with LEGO robots, android application development, scratch and 3D-modeling.
Faculty members spearheading the efforts with Acquaah are Claude Turner, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Dr. Pat Ramsey of the Department of Natural Science. For more information on USA Science and Engineering Festival, visit their website athttp://www.usasciencefestival.org/.
