(Bowie, Md.) – U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Donna Edwards (D-Md.) will discuss how the media impact politics and answer questions from a panel of Bowie State University students at a forum on Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Thurgood Marshall Library’s Special Collections Room. The event is open to the public.
BSU junior communications majors, Chanel Tate and Tamieka Briscoe-Chong, will lead question-and-answer sessions, and communications lecturer Dwight Ellis, who organized the event, is the moderator. A “Meet & Greet” reception with the congresswomen will immediately follow.
The event kicks off the Department of Communications’ new speaker series featuring prominent African-American professionals discussing the media’s role in their fields, said Dr. Pamela O’Brien, department chair. Additional speakers and events will be announced.
Rep. Lee spoke at the 2012 Democratic National Convention earlier this month in Charlotte, N.C., as one of two members of Congress appointed to sit on the committee charged with drafting the party's platform for the current presidential campaign. Elected the first woman to represent California’s 9th district in 1998, she also served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus from 2009-2011.
Rep. Edwards became the first African-American woman to represent Maryland in the U.S. Congress in 2008, serving the 4th district comprised of most of Prince George’s County and part of Montgomery County. She attracted media attention in 2009 as one of five members of Congress arrested outside the Sudan Embassy during a protest against genocide in Darfur.
