(Bowie, Md.) – Minister Louis Farrakhan, the longtime Nation of Islam leader, will speak to students and the public at a free lecture event Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Bowie State University’s Martin Luther King Communication Arts Center, Myers Auditorium. Doors open at 5 p.m.
The ticketed event, hosted by Bowie State’s Student Government Association (SGA) and the Black Male Agenda student organization, is aimed at encouraging students to think critically and to expose them to different perspectives.
“We want to challenge students to not only succeed academically, but also challenge their ideologies and their self-identities. He will challenge students to think and form their own opinions,” said Richard Lucas III, SGA sophomore class president and one of the event’s organizers.
Lucas said Farrakhan will also deliver an inspiring message to students. “He always brings a message of love, self-identity, pride, and independence,” he said.
Tickets will be available to the general public in advance starting Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the Bowie Card Office in the Wiseman Student Center, which is open from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25. Additional tickets will be available at the door, while supplies last.
Farrakhan’s appearance is part of the “I Am” lecture series, developed by Bowie State’s SGA leaders. The aim of the series is to encourage students to engage guest speakers in various topics relevant to their experiences. Past speakers include poet and activist Nikki Giovanni and actor-writer Hill Harper.
Farrakhan has served as the national representative of the Nation of Islam since 1975 and helped expand its reach to mosques and study groups in over 120 cities in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, as well as missions in Africa. He led the Million Man March on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in 1995 as a convening of mostly African-American men in a demonstration of unity.
