Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards

GENERAL ELIGIBILITY

  1. Nominations apply to all Bowie State University employees including Exempt and Non-Exempt staff, bargaining unit staff and long-term Contingent II employees who have been employed at the university for at least one year.
  2. All nominees must receive an annual performance evaluation (PMP) with a minimum overall "meets standards" rating or must be slated to receive an overall rating of "meets standards"
  3. Nominee must be an active employee on the University Payroll as of May 1st of the current evaluation year.
  4. A staff member who leaves the University prior to the recognition date for the Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards is no longer eligible.  

EXEMPT ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any full-time Exempt staff member who has been employed at BSU for at least one year is eligible. An individual whose primary appointment is that of a faculty member is not eligible.
  2. The award recognizes exceptional work performance, excellence in customer service or excellence in development /mentoring of BSU students by a member of the University staff.
  3. Selected recipient should have a career that is distinguished by a dedication to the fulfillment of the university goals, mission, and core values, by professional accomplishments, and campus service.
  4. Particular emphasis will be placed on contributions that have had a wide-ranging and enhancing influence on the entire campus community.
  5. Each department may nominate no more than one individual. The department head must approve the nomination before submission.
  6. Recipient will be honored at an annual Employee Recognition Awards Luncheon and will receive an allowance of $2500 for professional development, along with assistance and/or counseling in the enhancement of their professional development plans.

 

NON-EXEMPT ELIGIBILITY

  1. Any full-time Non-Exempt staff member who has been employed at BSU for one year and has satisfied the original probationary period is eligible. 

  2. The award recognizes exceptional work performance, excellence in customer service or excellence in development /mentoring of BSU students by a member of the University staff.
  3. Selected recipient will have extraordinary dedication to the fulfillment of the university goals, mission and core values.
  4. Each department may nominate no more than one individual. The department head must approve the nomination before submission.
  5. Recipient will be honored at an annual Employee Recognition Awards Luncheon and will receive an allowance of $2500 for professional development, along with assistance and/or counseling in the enhancement of their professional development plans.

 

 

NOMINATION CRITERIA

Recommendations for awards are based upon recognition of exceptional work performance, excellence in customer service or excellence in development /mentoring of BSU students.  Evidence must be clearly provided for the category in which the staff member is nominated.  You must then select/focus on three (3) elements within the category and indicate the 3 elements for which you are providing evidence.   If documentation is generalized rather than specific, the application will be disqualified. 

EXCEPTIONAL WORK PERFORMANCE

  • A. Accepted responsibilities and performs duties above and beyond what is normally expected
  • B. Worked diligently to help complete a critical work project
  • C. Demonstrated extensive knowledge and competence in a wide array of work related topics
  • D. Used knowledge and expertise to quickly troubleshoot/solve problems
  • E. Handled a large workload in an effective and timely fashion
  • F. Completed tasks with little description, direction or supervision
  • G. Exhibited a high degree of professionalism and serves as a checkpoint for quality control

EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE IN CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • A. Rendered a professional service of a unique or distinctive character which brought recognition to the Unit and/or University.
  • B. Assisted in improving the units/departments quality of customer service
  • C. Collaborated with and/or provided quality service to other departments and/or divisions.
  • D. Promoted positive morale by displaying a congenial, supportive attitude in providing customer service to others
  • E. Provided services which are outside the scope of normal work duties
  • F. Acted as a team player and encourages teamwork in others
  • G. Assisted others with both professional and personal challenges that impact work life

EXCELLENCE IN DEVELOPMENT AND/OR MENTORING OF BSU STUDENTS

  • A. Acted as a mentor for students by providing advice, guidance, feedback, and encouragement
  • B. Helped to integrate students into the university environment
  • C. Shared personal knowledge and skills with students in an effort to mentor them
  • D. Served as a role model for students
  • E. Promoted student development socially, academically and/or personally during the current review period
  • F. Achieved outstanding results in improving the retention or academic achievement or quality of life for students
  • G. Worked with the BSU community to promote the welfare of students

Nominations may be made by the immediate supervisor of eligible employees or by colleagues.
