New Mr. Bowie State Darius Gwynn Ready to Reign

By Auburn Mann

In the days following the Student Government Association (SGA) elections, a few of the triumphant candidates have already begun to organize their agenda’s for the 2013-2014 school year.

Newly elected Mr. Bowie State Darius Gwynn described the surreal feelings following his successful campaign. “It hasn’t hit me yet.” The rising senior has spent his entire college career in SGA roles, serving as class king every year since he was a freshman. It was this reality of his resume that factored into his campaign platform, "The Finishing Touch."

Gwynn said he was inspired to run each by the success of an older cousin who served as Miss Freshman and a candidate for Miss Bowie State in the late 1990s. Another source of inspiration was Mr. Bowie State University 2010-2011 Ameer- Hassan Walton, whom Gwynn refers to as “the older brother he never had.”

It was these sorts of influences that pushed Gwynn through the various trials that emerged along the campaign trail. Gwynn said he had an “extremely limited budget” which consisted of no more than $300. This affected essential resources such as campaign posters, fliers and other forms of advertisement. In addition, on Election Day, he had to endure examinations in four classes.

Outgoing Mr. Bowie State University 2012-2013 Devin-Denzel Davidson advised Gwynn that “Whatever he wants to happen, he needs to make it happen.”   This sentiment certainly extends to Gwynn’s plan to implement a series of community service and recreation programs that will ultimately serve to fortify the relationship between Bowie State University and broader Bowie community. This time next year Gwynn hopes that he will have “served fellow students, and been responsible for their success inside and outside the classroom."
