Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling

The Mental Health Program offers a Masters of Arts degree in Mental Health Counseling.  It is a 60-credit hour program that gives students an option to complete the courses required for initial licensure in the State of Maryland as a part of a degree. In addition, this program has three field experiences that give students the maximum amount of hours accepted for pre-degree for licensure, 1000 hours. The program provides professional preparation for persons wishing to become counselors in community mental health facilities, Universities and etc. The program places great emphasis on interpersonal and helping relationships, which require considerable commitment on the part of the student.

Admissions Requirements

Students must meet the following conditions to be considered for admissions:

  1. A completed application includes Undergraduate and/or Graduate transcripts;
  2. Three letters of recommendation, two of which are from a college professor or someone who can attest to the aptitude for graduate studies
  3. Letter of interest or Personal Statement which responds to the following:
    • Background information: Family, education and work.
    • Goals: What do you expect to be doing in five (5) years? In ten (10) years?
    • Strengths: What strengths do you have that would contribute to your being a good counselor?
    • Change: What do you believe to be the facets of your personality, behavior, and/or outlook that, if modified or changed, would make you a better person/counselor?  What plans, if any, do you have for making any such change(s)?
    • Why Bowie State University? Why did you decide to apply to the counseling program at B.S.U.?
    • Your comments: What additional information, thoughts, feelings, concerns and/or questions do you have?

Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
