DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Chair's Message
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS). As you browse through our Web pages you will learn more about the innovative programs we offer, as well as the stimulating and nurturing environment in which our students are mentored and prepared to become principled information technology (IT) professionals, and our faculty members who are driven to generate ideas that advance the IT practice.

We strive to match the emerging educational needs, driven by the rapidly changing technology, with learning opportunities that address those needs. The recognition of Bowie State University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in IA Education (CAE/IAE) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was largely driven by our IA curriculum. Most of the IA courses are certified by Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS): 4011 and 4013 certifications.

Active inquiry and real problem solving are emphasized as a major learning mode in all MIS course offerings. Our courses are delivered in computer laboratories or smart classrooms and include significant online content. Our primary instructional objective is to provide you with the state-of-the-art knowledge and the practical skills you need to be effective on the job from the very first day. You will be equipped with the requisite skills to think critically, demonstrate proficiency, and assume a leadership role in the application of IT in business and societal problem solving as well as in locating and seizing opportunities in the constantly changing marketplace. Our ability to offer both online and traditional classroom components for many MIS courses will enable you to preserve considerable flexibility in your course enrollment options. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of IT certification training as well as internship/apprenticeship programs through the auspices of our local business partners. These programs could lead to job placement upon your graduation.

Again, many thanks for your interest in the MIS Department. Please contact me if you need additional information about our academic or other programs. We invite you to visit us if you live in or are visiting the Washington metropolitan area.

With all good wishes,

David E. Anyiwo, Ph. D.

Student Support Programs

Our outreach programs have enabled our students to gain value through their participation in various activities within the institution and the local community. In particular, students have developed meaningful contact with faculty, alumni, corporate representatives and fellow students through the activities of the MIS Club, internship/practicum assignments, and attendance of professional society meetings.

Furthermore, our students have demonstrated excellence and talent both inside and outside the classroom. Their constant participation in the Opportunity Funding Corporation’s (OFC) Venture Challenge has enabled them to gain the knowledge, skills and judgment they need to prepare for life as entrepreneurs. The OFC Venture Challenge provides student teams from selected historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with a chance to simulate the real world process of raising venture capital. The Challenge has been held annually in Atlanta, Georgia, since 2001, and involves more than 28 HBCUs from the U.S. and the West Indies. A team of MIS students won the first prize trophy and the outstanding presentation awards in 2004. The team advanced to the MOOT CORP Competition, the preeminent global new venture competition involving the best business schools in the world.
