FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A. What do I need to have access to the Thurgood Marshall Library and other USMAI resources?

Before a patron can borrow materials from the Thurgood Marshall Library and access our resources remotely, one must have a university identification card from your home institution. If your home institution is Bowie State University an identification card, known as the Bowie Card, must be obtained from the Bowie Card office located in Room 118 in the J. Alexander Wiseman Center. Office Hours for the Bowie Card Office are: Monday thru Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. For further information concerning theBowie Card or the Bowie Card Office, please contact 301-860-3793

B. Does having a Bowie Card allow a patron to view Bowie State University's holdings as well as the holdings of other institutions within our consortium?

The Bowie Card also allows Bowie State University patrons to use resources from other libraries within our consortium, and check out those materials as well. However, before a patron can have remote access to our catalog, their Bowie Card must be registered at the Thurgood Marshall Library. Once registered, a patron can place requests on materials that are owned by other libraries within the USMAI. Loan periods for those items are determined by the patrons' status (undergraduate student, graduate student, staff, faculty, etc) and by the borrowing privileges for the owning library.

C. How do I register my Bowie Card and how often must I update it?

Borrowers can register their Bowie Card by completing a Thurgood Marshall Library Registration Form inside the Library. Once registered, that patron needs to visit or contact the Thurgood Marshall Library to renew/update their Library record once a year on or before September 1. If the patrons choose to update their Library account information, they will be asked to verify their identity. It is solely the borrower's responsibility to inform the Library of changes to their account information.
