How many soldiers have been deployed from Maryland since 9-11-2009?

November 11, 2009 marks the 90th anniversary of Veterans Day, a holiday that began as Armistice Day as proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson  in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I when hostilities ceased on the eleventh day at the eleventh hour of the eleventh month of 1918.

Congress passed an act on May 13, 1938 to mark Armistice Day as a legal observance and, in 1954, the name of the observance was changed to Veterans Day.  Veterans Day is meant to honor and remember all veterans and in view of the recent tragedy at Fort Hood, Texas and veterans returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the observation has become even more immediate, relevant and significant for all Americans.

Veterans Day is intended to be a day of remembrance, reflection and gratitude for all those who have served and continue to serve in our nation’s armed forces and their families who support them in the defense of our country. So on this Veterans Day 2009 if you know a veteran, are related to one or work with one make it your duty to say a simple, “Thank you for your service” to recognize and honor those veterans.
