Frances Austin, current doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Studies, has been recognized as an examplary employee by the Charles County Board of Education. Ms. Austin is currently a Special Education Teacher at Westlake High School in Waldorf, MD.
A ceremony took place April 10, 2012 in the Charles County Publics School building where Ms. Austin was recognized for her significant contributions to the Charles County School System in carrying out its mission of educating its children.

Dr. Rhonda Jeter Twilley who was appointed last year to the Board of Trustee’s for Taylor University ( the #1 regional university in the Mid-West) was appointed last month to the executive board of the Board of Trustees and also as the Vice-Chair of the Student Life Committee.

The Hattie M. Strong Foundation awards scholarships to College of Education undergraduate phase II teacher candidates based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, and an expressed interest in pursuing a degree in Early Childhood/Special Education, Elementary Education or Secondary Education. The overall mission of the Hattie M.Strong foundation is “To Help Young People of Promise."

Each will be receiving a $5,000 award from the Hattie M. Strong Foundation to be used in the pursuit of their bachelor's degrees in Teacher Education.

Two College of Education Faculty were recognized for Excellence in Teaching and Student Service at the Spring Inducation ceremony for Bowie State University's chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Professor Barbara Smith was awarded the "Excellence in Service to Students" award," and Dr. Bruce Crim was awarded the "Excellence in Teaching" award.
The National Society of Leadership and Success began with founder, Gary Tuerack's vision of creating a community where like-minded success, orented individauls could come together to learn and support each other.
The National Society of Leadership and Success was founded in 2001 with the sole purpose of creating lasting positive change. Beginning with a handful of chapters and no membership component, the Society now reaches more than 90,000 students around the world. The Society encourages community action, volunteerism, personal growth and strong leadership from its chapters and members around the world.

Dr. Lucille Strain has been recognized for outstanding service by the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE). This award is given to honor indiviuals with 20+ years experience of continuous and current membership with ATE. Dr Strain received this award at ATE's annual conference in Orlando, Florida on Monday, February 15, 2011.

Charisse Licorish has always been interested in research related to academic achievement. She is excited to joining a team dedicated to advancing the quality of teaching and learning. Ms. Licorish graduated from Bowie State University in May 2010, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.
College of Education/American Education Week Essay Contest

As part of this year’s events for American Education Week, the College of Education hosted an essay contest. The topic will be “How Can The Use of Technology Enhance the Classroom/Work Environment”.
Winners were chosen from several entries. First prize was awarded to Erin Roller, a graduate student in the College of Education's Graduate Reading Program. Ms. Roller received an Apple iPad, donated to the College of Education by Prince George's Council Woman Ingrid M. Turner.
The second place prize was awarded to Ms. Elise Perkins an undergraduate student in the College of Education's Early Childhood Special Education Initial Certification program. Elise received a mini laptop donated by the Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc.
