Purpose/Mission Statement The Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction Center (TuSIC) coordinates all student tutoring activities at Bowie State University. The primary purpose ofTuSIC is to improve student retention and academic achievement through a dynamic and interactive learning environment that supplements classroom instruction. Tutees are assisted to improve their class grades and become active and independent learners. Emphasis is on helping students succeed in gateway and traditionally difficulty courses. AdministrationThe Center is managed by a Director who is responsible for coordinating all the activities at the four locations of tutoring services. Peer tutors and faculty members provide quality tutoring services to students in various disciplines, particularly STEM courses. Participation Three basic types of participation are available to students: a. Mandatory Students who fail to attain prescribed scores in Math, English and Reading on their placement test (ACCUPLACER) are required to enroll in developmental courses in these subjects. These student receive targeted tutorial assistance b. Referrals Retention coordinators, academic advisors, and teachers may recommend students to participate in tutorials when their performance warrants it. c. Voluntary Students may seek tutorial services as they desire.
