WNYC Digital Media Internship

WNYC Radio is seeking an intern to work in various projects in the digital/interactive operations department.  This internship consists of tasks related to online producing, working with content management systems (CMS), data entry and content selection. Basic knowledge of HTML, Photoshop is preferred, but not required. Some web design opportunities will be made available to you, but this is NOT a mainly web design internship. This would be a good opportunity for a motivated individual who is interested in working with digital media. The right candidate will have a chance to carve out some aspects of this internship according to his/her skill set and interests.

Some skills you will gain:

  • Experience working with content management (Django / Wordpress)

Qualifications:

  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college
  • Must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week; days are flexible
  • HTML/CSS (by hand, not WYSIWYG editor)
  • Web Development & Design preferred
  • Photoshop / Illustrator preferred
  • Flash preferred but not required

This is an unpaid internship but WNYC offers a $10/day stipend.

Dates: mid-may till late august/early September

Weekly hours: 10-15/week, flexible days/times

Internship Responsibilities include:

  • Gather information about daily programming as well as special events coming up for listings
  • Write/edit listing copy
  • Find appropriate images for listings
  • Submit to publicity department
  • Assist in crafting language for live reads
  • Choose/edit music beds
  • Email copy and music title to host

Evening Music Daily Web Episodes:

  • Work with Evening Music producer on selection of interesting piece to feature in daily web episode copy.
  • Research the piece for interesting info to highlight in the episode copy
  • Draft/edit copy
  • Find/edit image for episode
  • Create web episode and code with html tags

Qualifications:

  • Must have great writing skills
  • Must have interest and experience in a variety of music genres (including classical, new, contemporary and jazz)
  • Ability to use pro tools or other sound editing software a plus
  • Comfortable with HTML
  • Ability to learn new software packages quickly
  • Good problem solver
  • Monitor incoming emails for messages that may need to forwarded to other members of the music department

*This internship is unpaid but WNYC does offer a $10/day stipend.

Junior-Level Analyst (supporting home energy efficiency programs)

This position requires a bachelor's degree and a one-year minimum of work or internship experience. The employee will work on a team that administers energy efficiency programs for new and existing homes on the local, state, and national level. Areas of work may include administrative support (e.g., handling communications with the public and private stakeholders, scheduling, answering phones, document editing, etc.), event planning assistance, database management, website editing, and other related activities.  The successful candidate will possess a superior working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), have effective Internet search capabilities, demonstrate good written and oral communication skills, be organized and detail oriented, work well in a team environment, and multitask effectively. Dreamweaver experience preferred.

The Capital City Fellows Program (CCFP) 2009 Application Recruitment Period Is Now Open
The DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) announces that the Capital City Fellows Program (CCFP) is now accepting applications for the 2009 fellowship. Applications will be accepted through April 1, 2009.

The CCFP is a mayoral initiative to attract recent graduates of master's degree programs in public administration, public policy, urban planning, law, engineering, business and related fields to work for the city of Washington, DC. Candidates compete for two-year fellowship appointments during which they complete four six-month rotations in different city agencies, including: the Office of the City Administrator, Department of Human Resources, Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Department of Human Services, Department of Transportation, Department of Corrections, Office of Planning, the Metropolitan Police Department, among many others.

In addition to on-the-job training in their host agencies, Fellows are given unique opportunities to meet with high-level city officials and participate in educational and professional development seminars. The program prepares Fellows to meet the challenges of local government public service and develops management talent for the city.

Fellows begin their service in October of each year and are selected through a competitive application process.

Centralized College Internship Program (CCIP) 2009 Application Recruitment Period Begins January 5
The DC Department of Human Resources (DCHR) announces that the Centralized College Internship Program (CCIP) will begin accepting applications for the 2009 Internship starting Monday, January 5, 2009.   Application deadline is April 1, 2009.
CCIP is a six-week program that offers summer positions (30-40 hours each week) to undergraduate and graduate students. The program is a Mayoral initiative designed to bring the best and brightest to the District's workforce by attracting, recruiting and retaining undergraduate and graduate students. The program promotes leadership in candidates who want hands-on public policy municipal government experience. Summer interns will also participate in professional development and roundtable seminars with senior government officials.

WNYC Radio is seeking a hands-on Controller to manage the daily activities of the finance department and to prepare monthly financial analyses of operations, including financial statements and supporting schedules. The Controller is responsible for the establishing and managing the company's financial policies and procedures, its accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of financial reports. The position is responsible for ensuring organizational compliance with general accounting controls and generally accepted accounting principles.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage accounting functions relating to accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, treasury, general journal and monthly reporting.
  • Prepare journal entries and maintain general ledger.
  • Responsible for month-end closing including posting of accruals and adjusting entries, preparation of balance sheet schedules, generation of financial statement reports, and preparation of monthly close work papers.
  • Analyze and reconcile accounts.
  • Maintain capital asset and depreciation schedules.
  • Conduct monthly variation analysis and report findings to management.
  • Manage and develop personnel in the finance department.
  • Provide analysis and assistance in budget and forecast preparation.
  • Perform treasury management and monitoring activities including preparation of cash transfers.
  • Supervise the annual audit and preparation of required documentation.
  • Establish and monitor effective financial and internal controls for the organization.
  • Assist in implementing IT initiatives of the department, including implementation of a new accounting software system.

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Accounting required
  • CPA certification preferred
  • 5-7 years of experience in financial management required
  • Excellent technical computer skills required
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written required
  • Proven track record of promotion and advancement required
  • Effective in managing staff required
  • Previous accounting manager/controller experience required
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills required
  • This position requires use of a computer, telephone and other office equipment; ability to communicate effectively through a variety of methods; requires ability to work extended hours as needed
