Dr. Chuka Onwumechili is a professor of communications in the department. Dr. Onwumechili received a BA in mass communications from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Nigeria; an MSA in advertising from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL; and a PhD in human communication studies from Howard University in Washington, DC.

Dr. Onwumechili teaches a variety of courses, including several in the areas of communications research, intercultural communications, and telecommunications. He also facilitates seminars in internship and practicum courses. He has more than 15 years of teaching experience. Among his several duties at the University are his service as advisor to master's degree theses. In addition, he has also served as an external examiner on several PhD dissertations at other universities.

He has researched and published in his field over a long span of time. His published books include Reform, Organizational Players, and Technological Developments in African Telecommunications: An Update (2003); Press and Politics in Africa (2000), African Democratization and Military Coups (1998), and Communication and the Transformation of Society: A Developing Region's Perspective (1995). His works have also appeared in the following academic journals: Info/The Journal of Policy, Regulation, and Strategy for Telecommunications, Information, and Media; International Journal for Intercultural Relations (IJIR); Telecommunications Policy; Howard Journal of Communications; Africa Media Review; and Communication Research Reports. Dr. Onwumechili has also presented numerous papers at several professional conferences including those organized by the International Communication Association (ICA), Eastern Communication Association (ECA), National Communication Association (NCA), African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), African Studies Association (ASA), the Intercultural Communication Conference (ICC), Third World Studies Conference, and Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research (SIETAR), among several others.

Dr. Onwumechili's work has garnered quite a list of recognitions. These include an invitation to work with a group of renowned international scholars and United States ambassadors in a funded study on Islam and obstacles to democracy and modernization. The study was under the auspices of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He has also worked on several grants to assist student learning. One such grant investigated student retention at the University and others sponsored by the Office of Minority Health (OMH) assisted students in designing communication products for the promotion of preventative healthcare. His papers have also received top paper awards at professional conferences.

Dr. Onwumechili's hobbies include writing, sports and soccer administration, and historical record keeping. He also manages his own website at www.supereaglesnation.com.
