Samuel A. Duah, assistant professor, received a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1979 and an MBA in accounting and finance from Atlanta University in 1981. He currently serves as chair of the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics. Professor Duah has taught at Bowie State University for more than 24 years. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting and finance. Before becoming chair of the department in 2004, he was the coordinator for the accounting program from 1985 to 2004. Professor Duah also served on the curriculum committee for one year as vice chairman. He has also served as acting dean in the dean's absence. Professor Duah has served on other University school and department committees, including Faculty Senate, faculty search committees and the School of Business Dean's Search Committee. In addition to his duties as an instructor and chair of the department, Professor Duah is a certified public accountant and often serves as a consultant in the areas of accounting, taxes, and auditing. Phone 301-860-3632 / Email: jlanciano@bowiestate.edu Joseph Lanciano, assistant professor, received a Bachelor of Science degree with a dual major in business and political science from Bloomsburg State University in 1976 and an MPA in financial management from Penn State University in 1977. He also earned his CPA license from Maryland in 1982.
Professor Lanciano currently serves as the coordinator of the accounting program in the Department of Accounting, Finance, and Economics. This program is one of the largest and best programs at Bowie State University, with almost 125 majors. He has taught at Bowie State University for almost 30 years, beginning when he was 22 years old. Professor Lanciano teaches junior and senior level courses in accounting, auditing, and tax. In addition, he has served on numerous University and school committees, including the finance, curriculum, and various search committees. Professor Lanciano also serves as an advisor to the Student Accounting Club at Bowie State University. He spends a lot of time helping accounting majors find jobs and internships in accounting firms, private companies, and government agencies. Professor Lanciano's duties as an instructor and coordinator of the accounting program are varied. He is a CPA and often serves as a consultant to small businesses and individual taxpayers, and is a member of the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and the Maryland Society of Accountants. Professor Lanciano has been married for 27 years to his wife, Kathryn, a pediatric nurse practitioner. Their daughter, Nicole, is a student at Salisbury University. In his spare time, Professor Lanciano enjoys sports, traveling, gardening, reading, and fine dining. William G. Davidson III; MBA, JD, CPAPhone 301-860-3628 / Email: wdavidson@bowiestate.edu William Davidson joined the faculty of Bowie State University in 1989. He served as an assistant professor until May 1998, when he was appointed associate professor. He received tenure in 1992. In 2005 he was appointed as acting assistant vice president for finance and administration for six months, and worked on the University's 2006-2007 budget. Dr. Davidson has taught accounting, tax, finance, and business law on both the graduate and undergraduate levels after completing a multifaceted career in upper-level management in the private sector. He has also practiced as an attorney and CPA and spent seven years on active duty with the U.S. Navy and reached the grade of lieutenant commander. He worked in the financial management area from 1969 until 1980 for Allied Chemical as a financial analyst, as an assistant controller for Dennison Manufacturing Co. in Boston, MA, as chief financial officer for Premix Inc., a manufacturing company located near Cleveland, OH, and as an internal consultant and then as controller for General Business Services in Rockville, MD. Davidson practiced as a tax and commercial lawyer and certified public accountant in Rockville and Fairfax, VA, and taught as an adjunct professor in the MS in taxation program at Southeastern University in Washington, DC, where he also served as chair of the accounting and taxation programs.
He has served on numerous University, department, and school committees during his tenure, including the University Curriculum Committee, University Rank and Tenure Committee, and numerous departmental and University search committees, including a Presidential Search Committee. He also was instrumental in gaining accreditation for the business programs at Bowie State University with the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs in 1998. He earned a Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University Law School in Boston in 1974 and a Master of Business Administration with a major in corporation finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960. Dr. Davidson is admitted to the bars of Maryland, the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Ohio, the U.S. Supreme Court; and other federal courts. He is also a licensed CPA in Maryland. Symon Manyara, MSA, CPA, CCAPhone 301-860-3635 / Email: smanyara@bowiestate.edu Symon Manyara, an instructor of accounting at undergraduate and graduate levels, is a Certified Cost Analyst and a Certified Public Accountant. He is a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Maryland Society of Accountants.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Howard University and a Master of Science degree in accounting from Southeastern University. He has taught accounting at various area colleges and universities, which include Prince George's Community College, Montgomery College, and Southeastern University. He taught as adjunct faculty member at Bowie State University from 1987 until joining the University full-time in 1995. Professor Manyara started his accounting career in public accounting in 1981 and worked on various audit assignments, including Baltimore City, with the then Coopers and Lybrand's joint venture with Linwood Jennings, PA. He worked with MCI Communications as a staff administrator/financial analyst during 1986-1993. At Bowie State University, Professor Manyara directed the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program for several years. This program offered free tax help for low- to moderate-income taxpayers who could not prepare their own tax returns or afford professional tax services. His effort enhanced Bowie State University's reputation in our community. He is currently responsible for the preparation of graduate programs of study in accounting. McNeal, lecturer, received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Morgan State College (now University) and a Master of Science in management (financial accounting option) from Purdue University. He was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in 1980 by the state of Maryland. He has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants since 1980.
Professor McNeal is currently a full-time faculty member in the undergraduate and graduate accounting programs, and teaches Principles of Accounting, Financial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, Governmental and Institutional Entities Accounting, Business Mathematics, and Principles of Management. Prior to coming to Bowie State University in 1999, Professor McNeal held the position of academic director for accounting/associate professor at the University of Maryland University College. His full-time academic career started in 1989 as an instructor at Howard University. At Howard, he taught Principles of Accounting and Advanced Accounting, and served as the chairperson for the Faculty and Student Grievance Committee. Prior to teaching full-time, he taught for over 12 years as an adjunct assistant professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Loyola College in Baltimore, Hood College in Frederick, MD, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Community College of Baltimore, and Howard Community College. Professor McNeal has over 30 years of professional experience in the areas of audit, tax, consulting, and nonprofit accounting. He was employed in the auditing and management consulting departments of Ernst and Young, CPAs. He held the positions of research accountant, assistant corporate tax manager, and divisional accounting manager at McCormick and Co. Inc., a worldwide spice manufacturer. In addition, he has held senior management positions with these national nonprofit organizations: The Enterprise Foundation (a national nonprofit housing provider), The National Learning Center (Capital Children's Museum), American Association of University Women, and Educational Foundation. In addition, he provides accounting, tax, and management advisory services to area small businesses. Professor Bernard McNeal has remained active in the community by serving on the board of directors for both the Maryland Kidney Foundation (Baltimore, MD) and The Children's Fresh Air Society (Street, MD). Dr. Sawyer received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, with honors, from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Science in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University, and a PhD in finance from the University of Tennessee. Prior to his current position, Dr. Sawyer was executive director of the Department of Labor-funded initiative for Partnership Building in Workforce Development at Johnson C. Smith University and a tenured professor of finance.
Dr. Sawyer was awarded a Nissan fellowship to the University of Chicago, and has taught at the University of Tennessee, Drexel University, Seton Hall University, the College of Insurance, and Norfolk State University. Dr. Sawyer has consulted nationally, and also internationally in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. He has been featured in Black Enterprise magazine;The New York Voice; the Virginian Pilot; affiliates of NBC, CBS and ABC; Cox Broadcasting; New Jersey Public Television; the New Journal and Guide, and Entrepreneur Magazine. He has been a speaker at numerous professional meetings, including the Kaufman Foundation Conference on Entrepreneurial Development, the National Association of Investment Companies, and the President's Conference on Small Business. He has published in scholarly journals including the Journal of Financial Economics and the International Journal of Quality Science. Dr. Sawyer has served the community in many capacities, including as president of the South Orange-Maplewood, NJ, Board of Education, as a board member of the Hospital Center of Orange, NJ, as a founding member of the Hampton Roads 100 Black Men, and as a member of the NAACP Executive Board in Charlotte, NC. He has been married to his wife, Donna, an arts administrator, for 31 years. They have two daughters, Jacquelyn and Elizabeth. Sunando Sengupta, PhDPhone 301-860-3630 / Email: ssengupta@bowiestate.edu Dr. Sunando Sengupta, assistant professor, received his Bachelor of Science in economics (with minors in statistics and mathematics) from the University of Calcutta, India, in 1997 and his master's in economics from the Center of Economic Studies and Planning in Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, in 1999. In 1998, he qualified for the National Education Test, a national-level test for selecting faculty to teach in an Indian college or university. While he was pursuing his doctoral studies in economics at Arizona State University, he also graduated from the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program in 2004. He earned his PhD in economics from the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University in 2005. His focus of research was market microstructure and flow of information in international financial markets. While in graduate school, he taught Principles of Macroeconomics and Principles of Microeconomics. Dr. Sengupta has always been passionate about teaching and trying to enhance the learning experience through use of various technological aids such as Blackboard, PowerPoint, audios, and videos. His love for teaching brought him to the Bowie State University, where he has been teaching as an assistant professor since fall 2005. He teaches a variety of undergraduate finance courses: Principles of Finance, Investments, Corporate Finance, and Small Business Finance. He also taught an economics course, ECON 483: Quantitative Methods for Decision Making, in spring 2006. He also worked as a research assistant for the Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University in the summer of 2005, helping to assess the impact of the state of Arizona's investment in science and technology research.
Dr. Sengupta has presented his research findings in both national and international research conferences, including the annual meeting of the Financial Management Association, Washington Research Forum, International Academy of Business and Economics annual conference, and brown bag seminar at Arizona State University. He has published his research in various peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of International Finance and Economics, Review of Business Research, and International Journal of Business and Finance Research. In May 2005, he won the Outstanding Research Award at the Costa Rica conference of the Institute of Business and Finance Research. He also acts as a referee for the Applied Financial Economics and International Academy of Business and Economics. Dr. Sengupta is the co-advisor of the Finance and Economics Club at Bowie State University and has successfully organized various speaker events both within the University and outside. He has a certificate in grant writing from The Grant Institute in California. He also is an active member of the University Information and Technology Resources Committee and recently volunteered to participate in a workshop to develop online courses at Bowie State University. He has been a member of Strategic Plan Committee for his department and co-authored the Strategic Plan for 2007-08. He is a member of the University Constitution Committee, is the library liaison, and has been a member of the search committee for new faculty hires in 2006 and 2007. He is currently working as the chair of the Standard 6 Committee (Educational and Business Process Management) for the School of Business ACBSP Reaffirmation coming up in 2008. Dr. Sengupta is married and lives in Laurel, MD. He loves traveling and has a passion for films. Fiseha Eshete, ABDPhone 301-860-3625 / Email: feshete@bowiestate.edu Fiseha Eshete, assistant professor of economics, has been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses since 1982. Over the years, he served as economics area coordinator, chairman of the University Grievance Committee, and representative on the University's Rank and Tenure, Senate, Catalogue, Policy and Standards, and Curriculum committees.
In his capacity as a faculty advisor of Delta Mu Delta, a national honor society in business, Professor Eshete coordinated programs, raised scholarship funds, and promoted excellence. Professor Eshete attended several professional meetings, seminars, and conferences, presented papers, and wrote proposals. He served as professional paper reviewer and worked with major publishing textbook review committees. Professor Eshete has served as a member and officer of professional organizations, and worked actively with national and international organizations that promote higher education, poverty alleviation, human right and the rule of law. As coordinator of the Books for Ethiopia project, he raised over 30,000 textbooks and educational supplies for public universities in his native Ethiopia. Over the years, Professor Eshete has received certificates of recognition from Delta Mu Delta National Honor Society, Prince George's County, Bowie State University Mentor's Program, and School of Professionals Studies. As consultant at Synergy Inc. of Washington, DC, Professor Eshete worked under contract for various government and private agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Housing and Urban Development, and Department of Energy. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he worked as a financial analyst at the United Planning Organization of Washington, DC, taught part-time at the University of the District of Columbia, managed the mathematics laboratory at Howard University, and served as a regional supervisor for Advo-Courier System. Professor Eshete's area of expertise includes economic model building and quantitative forecasting using software packages Lindo and other application softwares. In fall 1999, Professor. Eshete was awarded the Lyman T. Johnson Fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where he did his doctoral work in resource economics. He also did doctoral work in economics at Howard University (ABD) and earned Master of Science degrees in economics and resource economics at Southern Connecticut State and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, respectively. He earned his bachelor's degree at Haile Selassie University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1970. Regina Tawah, PhDPhone 301-860-3645 / Email: rtawah@bowiestate.edu Dr. Regina Tawah joined Bowie State University as an assistant professor of economics in August 2004 after serving the institution as an adjunct faculty for a number of years. She began her teaching career in the Department of Economics at the University of Yaounde, Cameroon, as an instructor where she served from 1981 to 1983, and continued later at the University of Yaounde II, Soa, Cameroon from 1993 to 1999. Dr. Tawah also taught at the Cameroon School of Public Works, Prince Georges' Community College in Maryland, and Strayer University in Washington, DC, on a part-time basis. She teaches or has taught Economics of Developing Countries, International Economics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Managerial Economics, and the Principles of Economics.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Tawah has worked as a researcher and a consultant with diverse institutions, including the World Bank, the African Poverty Alleviation Program, the Rural Development Group in Yaounde, Cameroon, and the Observatory of Change in the Societies of Cameroon. She has authored or co-authored studies on poverty and rural development for Cameroon, Angola, and Rwanda. Together with colleagues, Dr. Tawah has written grants for collaborative research on poverty awarded by the African Economic Research Consortium for a study of economic reforms and poverty in Cameroon in the 1990s, and another one awarded under the Gender and Economic Reforms in Africa Program of the North-South Institute, Ottawa, Canada. Her research interests are in the areas of poverty, women's issues, and economic development in general. Dr. Tawah has participated in several professional development institutes, workshops, and conferences covering, among other topics: teaching economics, poverty, economic reforms, gender issues, and engagement and attainment for minority students. She earned her PhD in economics from the Free University of Berlin, Germany, in 1993; an MS in economics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1981; and a BS (Hons) in management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1980. In December 2003, Dr. Brown received her doctorate degree in economics from Howard University. Currently, Dr. Brown holds a position as an assistant economics professor at Bowie State University. She was a member of the search committee that played a role in appointing Dr. Mickey Burnim as president of Bowie State University. She serves on various University committees, including Faculty Senate and the University Strategic Planning Committee. Dr. Brown serves as the chair for the University Fiscal Affairs Committee. She worked as an economic advisor to the book, Living Your Life Backward, by Mr. Reginald Daniel. She is a published author in the Music and Entertainment Industry Association Journal. Dr. Brown developed market and feasibility studies for the proposed Westphalia Town Center Project in Prince George's County, Maryland.
She served as a book reviewer for McGraw Hill Publishers. She serves as a co-advisor to the Economics and Finance Club and has worked on service-learning grant proposals with Bowie State University and Howard University. Before her post at Bowie State, Dr. Brown spent one year as a visiting professor at Belmont University in Nashville, TN, where she taught economics courses and wrote a paper for various record labels and the Chamber of Commerce examining the economic impact of the music industry on the city of Nashville. Dr. Brown has held positions and conducted funded research for the federal government. Previously, she worked as a financial economist with the Washington, DC, Office of Research and Analysis. Her job entailed forecasting sales and individual income tax revenue for Washington, DC. She developed economic models for tax policy initiatives that were presented by the city council. She was also a member of the team that examined the structural imbalance of the Washington, DC, government. Before joining the Washington, DC, government, she worked with the Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Policy Research and Analysis as an economic research affiliate. While at HUD, she helped develop housing policies that brought forward such publications as The State of the Cities, Now is the Time, and The Rural Report, to name a few. Dr. Brown has presented papers at the American Real Estate and Urban Economic Association Conference and the Southern and Eastern Economic Association conferences. She has written urban and housing economic papers that have received grant funding through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. Brown is also a member of the National Association of Business Economists, the Eastern Economic Association, and the National Association of Security Dealers. She is currently featured in the Manchester's "Who's Who Among Professional Women." She aspires to become a voice for the voiceless in the areas of housing, poverty, economic empowerment, and various urban and financial economic policy issues. Daren A. Dr. Conrad earned the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Ph.D. in economics from Howard University in Washington, DC.
While at Howard, Dr. Conrad was actively involved in numerous aspects of student government. He served as a two term President of the Howard University chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon (ODE), where he worked closely with the alumni association and faculty in planning academic seminars and scholarship fundraising activities. He also served as the Fiscal Coordinator of the Graduate Student Assembly and Graduate Student Council. Prior to assuming his current position at Bowie, Dr. Conrad served as the Assistant Manager for Research Education and Technical Assistance at Howard University. Before working at Howard, Dr. Conrad held various positions in corporate and nonprofit organizations, including First Citizens Bank of Trinidad and Tobago Limited, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Republic Bank of Trinidad and Tobago Limited, and the Howard University Center for Urban Progress. Dr. Conrad is passionate about teaching. Central to his teaching philosophy is the notion that theory and practice are integrated activities. As such, he tries to demonstrate the practical application of economic models and expose students to real problems facing economists. He also encourages students to take and defend policy positions based on their understanding of formal models and assigned readings. This approach, he believes, promotes independent thinking which is the basic tenet of teaching. Dr. Conrad is a member of a number of professional associations and is actively engaged in writing and submitting manuscripts to various journals for publication. His current research focus is on human capital and economic growth. He has done extensive work in measuring and incorporating human capital as a key variable in determining the level-specific effects of education on economic growth. He also has written papers on economic analysis in the context of international affairs in which he has explored the role of trade liberalization on poverty reduction, Multinational Commercial Enterprises and their effect on economic growth, and the economic role of the United Nations in our changing world. Dr. Conrad serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Developing Areas and an external reviewer for the Community College of Baltimore County, Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, cooking, and sampling dishes from other cultures. Byron K. Henry, CPA, Ph.D.Phone: 301-860-4030 / Email: bhenry@bowiestate.edu Dr. Henry is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics at the Bowie State University College of Business. Prior to his current appointment, he served as an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Howard University (1997-2009) and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Vermont (1996-1997). He has published articles in the areas of state and local taxation and accounting education and presented numerous papers on a wide array of accounting topics. His research interests include accounting and reporting issues affecting nonprofit organizations as well as the ethical practices and perceptions of accountants.
Dr. Henry teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in accounting through both face-to-face and online delivery systems. He strongly believes that learning is best achieved by doing and emphasizes problem-based learning in his courses to strengthen the development of critical thinking skills among his students. Dr. Henry holds a Bachelors of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, a Masters of Accountancy from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in Accounting from Texas A&M University. He holds licenses to practice as a certified public accountant (CPA) in Texas, Maryland, and Vermont. Dr. Henry has held professional positions with Ernst & Whinney, the Texas State Comptroller of Public Accounts and the Texas State Auditor's Office. Dr. Henry's professional and community affiliations include the Texas and Maryland Societies of CPAs, the American Accounting Association, and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA). Dr. Henry currently serves on the governing boards of the Savage Boys and Girls Club (SBGC) and The Columbia Ravens Football, Inc. He also serves on the Audit Committee for the First Baptist Church of Guilford (Columbia, Maryland). Prior to leaving Howard University, he served on the Board of Directors of the Howard University Employees Federal Credit Union (HUEFCU). Beyond his professional and community activities, Dr. Henry enjoys traveling, coaching youth sports, running and spending time at home with his wife and sons. Jongdoo Lee, Ph.D.

Dr. Lee earned the MBA from the University of Rochester and Ph.D. in Finance from George Washington University. Before joining BSU, Dr. Lee was an assistant professor at West Chester University in Pennsylvania for five years and worked at Koomin Bank in Korea, which is the largest commercial bank in Korea. He served as financial market analyst for two years at the bank. The teaching philosophy of Dr. Lee is communication. He adopts the students' interest in his class and integrates the learning objectives with the interests of students. He believes the teaching is not one way lectures; rather it is two way communications. In addition, Dr. Lee believes that finance teaching should be practical. Hence, he tries to connect the theoretical aspects with the practical application in real business world. Dr. Lee participates in a number of professional associations and is actively engaged in writing and submitting manuscripts to various journals. His research interest covers various topics including corporate finance, futures market, market microstructures, and financial market regulation. His recent publication in "Journal of Futures Market" explores the dynamic trading strategy of future market traders. Dr. Lee also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of International Financial Market.
