MTM INFLUENCES (Alright, Alright, Alright) By Crystal Gillespie How many times have you mocked or mimicked punch lines from a movie, TV show or music video/song? In my opinion, I believe that we have a new language developing within the youth! It’s at the point where we find ourselves creating terms from various entertainment fields and making their words a new language by merging them together. Could this be the new form of communication beyond Standard English? I have witnessed young adults who communicate with people in their age group by using the terms below: · On Who? · On Everything Moe! · Pineapples! · You Gone Learn Today. · You Anything. · Whaa? · Stamp! · She/ He on my line. · Make It Rain. · Kill. · Cuz. · That Aint About Nothing. · Five Head. · Naaw. · I Got The Munchies. · That ____ Cray Although some of these words appear in our dictionary, they are used for other reasons. Adopted from entertainment with a “lil twist,” I find myself thinking today’s youth are BRILLIANT! To some, this language may be ignorance, and a poor reflection of the English language. However, I think that if one has the ability to converse with another, and grasps the language as a whole, I think it’s beautiful. To communicate without a dictionary, and know the meaning of words, is a hidden intelligence that is often looked down upon by some segments of our society. Could this be a new language beyond EBONICS? If this language continues to grow among youth across the country, we may see this on future applications: What languages are you fluent in? English? Spanish? French? NALSBY- New Age Language Spoken By the Youth? This can very well happen if this becomes national. If our government is unable to understand this dialect, there could be a threat to our society (unlikely) causing the nation to submit to the youth and learn this language. In my opinion, if you’re fluent in the great English language, NALSBY (which I made up) will only allow you to communicate and effectively understand what the young adults of our country are saying. |
