What is the C.O.R.E Campaign team? By: Veronique St.Clair Like most if not all presidents, have had initiatives and make committees to push through their sub-agenda's. For the Student Government Association (SGA) of Bowie State University, President Kirk Pressley's committee is named quite appropriately C.O.R.E. which stands for : Captivating, Obtaining, Representing, Executing and is modeled after his campaign slogan from the spring 2010 election. Though those are all great verbs, what does this team do for the President and the Bowie State Community as a whole? In an interview with Brain Mason the Co-chair of the C.O.R.E. Team he answers, "The core campaign team basically is a division of our president and vice president (Jamin Gallman), any ideas they have this semester they push through us to evoke more school spirit and unite in BSU at its core." Brain stated. Q: What qualities did Kirk see in you to make you the Co-chair of the C.O.R.E. Team? A: "Umm, he really wanted people who are really outgoing and outspoken and people that love their university. I and the chair Tyvie Herbert, we really love this school and we've always been active since our freshman year and just go-getters, and we really want this school to go forward. So that is what he saw in me." Brian says. Q: What made you decide to take him up on this offer? A: " I was going by one day and I saw what it said C.O.R.E. Campaign team and I really felt what it meant, so said ‘hey you I love my school' and I have a lot of ideas that I want to put forth. Brian mentioned. Q: What is it like working as CO-chair with Tyvie? A: "Tyvie is cool I've known Tyvie since we've been here it's been almost four years now and we just mesh everything together. Everything works fine, two peas in a pod, I guess." Brian says. Q: What is Kirk asking you to push forward as of now? A: "As of right now, we are really pushing for more events and putting SGA really out there. We are definitely doing more social events just to get the students involved. One big thing we have a problem with is a lot of students going home on the weekends because of how bored they are on campus, so definitely do a lot more weekend activities such as the bowling party which is next week on September 24, and there will also be a skate party around the time of Halloween. Just more events." says Brian. Q: So would you call it more event planning then anything else? A: "Definitely! It's a lot of event planning, its just trying to really brighten the mood of the university and I guess the only way to get people out to see what the school has to offer is through the events that we do, so definitely a lot of event-planning and events just a taskforce all together." Brian said. Q: Do you have any aspirations other than being Co-chair for the CORE right now? A: "Right now, not really I mean there is a lot going on with C.O.R.E. right now, as it is right now my heart is really with C.O.R.E." Brian said. Q: Are you helping any other parts of SGA? A: "As core since we really are event planning and we really work tight knit with CAB. We are really doing a lot of events together and we are embracing each other and enhancing each other as well. We definitely are trying to work with other organizations such as fraternities and sororities and with the classes like the sophomore class and the junior class. We are really just uniting and if there are any other organizations interested, we're looking for events to help them out as well." Brian says. Q: So do you look for sponsorships for your events? A: "No for the most part core pays for most of it, like a lot of projects other organization C.O.R.E. is offering to put the money up or a collaborative payment to show that Bowie is unified."
