Pride of Africa

By Anita-Charlotte Okpeolou

The sun that has shined down on me,

Kissed my skin and made me strong

I am from a line of women with pride

Who fight for what they believe is true

I was raised with a rage for glory, pride

And loved by the ones before me

I'm a passionate soldier with a golden heart

And the blood of those women flows in me

I was taught to use my intellect as a sword

So that I can dream of victory and success

I was built fearless, forged with traditions

For Stella, the woman who carried me

Celina the one who protected and cared for me,

I'm standing tall, strong with respect and gratitude

Thanks for shaping me into this unbreakable woman

I am a survivor who collapsed many times before

But stood stronger each time; never will I be destroyed

By life or even by the wild wind of the tornado of death

I'm a descendent of kings, queens, warriors and healers

I am chained to a family known for its unnatural power

Like a candle in the dark, I rise with pride to shine bright

My light will carry on through future generations

As a stronghold of wealth, love and faith in God

I am the daughter of the moon, kings, healers and warriors

My story is a chanted one and will be told far after I'm gone

With the blood of kings flowing through my veins,

I am proud to be

Anita-Charlotte Okpeolou,

Daughter of Stella Anthony

Daughter of Celina Connie

Pride of my family

Pride of Africa
