| By Jamal Barbari "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." This is one of Martin Luther King's (King) quotes that I believe pertains to modern day events with the election of our new president Barack Obama. King's dream was for African Americans to reach the top of the staircase even though we couldn't see where it ended. His beliefs, faith and inexhaustible march paved the way for our education, equality and overall lifestyle. The opportunities that we have as a people are endless and will forever impact our future. As we continue to walk the steps, it is important to remember what our ancestors have done for us and to make the best for what was fought and died for. As we progress through the world, few have attempted to bring out the full potential of King's dream and what he truly wanted for the African American people. He not only wanted the freedom and equality but also to prove to the world that we weren't just tools used to better the nation that we didn't have any stake in. The impact of our presence will forever be imprinted into this nation now and forever because of men like King, Jesse Jackson and of course President Obama. We made dreams become realities, hopes become opportunities, and our lives are now meaningful when it all seemed unpromising. "Yes we can" are the words that president Obama gave to us during his campaign, but now that he made it, and so can we, it's yes we will. |
