TRIO Welcomes New Counseling CoordinatorO'Brien Joins Staff
By Jamal Barbari TRIO students were disappointed to hear last summer that TRIO counseling coordinator Jocelyn Bush would not be with them when the new school year began. Although, students were exhilarated about her new position with the See Forever Foundation and Maya Angelou Academy, they couldn't help but wonder who was going to replace her as the person they see about school matters. However, TRIO students need not be disappointed because program officials have appointed Marilyn O'Brien to the position of counseling coordinator. O'Brien is originally from Philadelphia where she grew up and attended Penn State University. Later on, after moving several times, she attended graduate school in Minneapolis, and has recently moved back to the East Coast from Detroit. She has been working with students for over 14 years in a variety of schools at all educational levels. O'Brien's experiences and education is wide ranging. She has knowledge in the fields of counseling, medicine and even the fine and performing arts. With O'Brien's special skills and past experiences, she wants to bring a variety of assistance to the students' needs. "I really enjoy students in general. I've spent a lot of time working with college students and have enjoyed helping them reach their potential. Particularly the freshmen who are new to the college process and are in need of advice in all the areas that comes with the responsibility of being a new college student." O'Brien went on to say, "It's a tough transition into college and my skills in the past allow me to offer a variety of services to them such as study skills, time and stress management, academic instruction and general assistance in whatever they need help." Asked why she wanted to work with the TRIO program at Bowie State, O'Brien said "TRIO is a balanced and wonderful program with committed staff members who are experienced and have great backgrounds. It incorporates a mixture of helpful services to all of its students and offers exciting new challenges to overcome. I'm glad to be a part of the TRIO program and having the opportunity to enhance our students' potential. I'm excited to have the chance to help students towards a successful school career as well as their future." O'Brien's is a woman of many talents who enjoys artwork, performing arts, reading, and watching basketball and classic films. She is married and has three daughters. It appears that O'Brien is a going to be a great asset to the TRIO program. |
