The TRIO Achievers Program welcomed 38 new members into the organization during its Fall 2009 Induction Ceremony on Nov. 5 in CLT 102.

There are so many student support programs on campus that are not acknowledged and the Trio Achievers Program is one of them. What is the Trio Achievers Program, you might ask? Trio is an educational opportunity outreach program design to motivate and support students with disadvantage backgrounds, said Rhonetta Brooks, a TRIO member who served as mistress of ceremonies at the event.

The program provides students with tutoring, counseling, academic advisement and more educational and future guidance. The program goal is to increase the college graduation rate and help students make the transition from one educational level to the next, members said.

The auditorium was festooned with colorful balloons as images showcasing the program's initiatives were projected onto a large screen accompanied by inspirational quotes from Paulo Freire, Margaret Fuller, Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and many more notable figures from history. Academic advisement specialist Nichole Mason introduced program director Monica Turner, who approached the stage with a broad smile and grace as she prepared to deliver her speech.

"While you are in school you will hear so many messages what and what not to do," Tuner said, speaking to the inductees. "Grades are always important and of course all of us want to strive to make the best grades that we can."

Turner said she permits every member in Trio to get three D's and three D's only: discover, decide and demand. "Discover who you are and then decide what to do. Once you've discovered and decided, then look at yourself and look at that decision and demand that you follow though. Don't expect less from yourself, then you would from someone else. This moment is all about you, we want to thank you for choosing to be a part of Trio because it's a great decision."

When asked, "What will you like to say to anyone that would be interested in joining Trio?" Brooks replied, "Trio is the absolute best student support program on campus! They never hesitate to help you in your time of need by providing you with the most important resources and aids needed. There is no way that you will not achieve any goal that you have set for prosperous future."
