State of Campus Housing in Alex HaleyBy Resident Assistant Adrienne ComerWhen you are home does your mom allow you to put your feet on the table? Eat throughout the house? Write all over the walls, or disrespect your household? The answer to these questions as our mother would say, "I don't think so, Not in my house!" Those words ring true not only coming out of our parents mouth but should be carried with us as we stay at our new homes while in college. Alex Haley Residential Complex is considered home for 318 students who parent's sacrifice to send their children to a higher place of learning, while living in comfort. The question still lures the air in residential homes, "Would you treat the same place in which you reside now, as you do your parents home?" In all reality some students do treat our residential community as if they don't care, leaving trash all over, bathrooms a mess, and mistreating rules and violations administered from the university. In addition, at Bowie State University, a majority of our students are housed on campus and Alex Haley Residential Complex is one out seven housing developments used to house our students. It is composed of males and females of all classes and staffed by a residential director with the assistance of six on duty residential assistants. Additionally, many of the building amenities include laundry facilities, floor lounges, computer lab, and kitchenettes. Even though this wonderful hall has so much to offer it is how our students represent it that counts the most. There are many ways in which we can assist our living community such as picking up behind ourselves, obeying rules, and respecting the space around us, this is for all halls. Furthermore, although Bowie does offer our student's great housing opportunities many people still question, is it enough? Sophomore Ebony Fowlkes stated, " Being an out of state student, I believe freshman and out-of-state students should be offered and get housing because we live so far away, and it's unfair when students who live 15 minutes away are offered housing and guaranteed it sometimes first." Bowie State could always use more housing and are in the process of getting it. Also, there are many changes that the residential offices will be making for the 2008-2009 school year. One thing that will be changed is the recontracting process. Make sure you go to the Office of Residential Life to inquire what the changes are so that you won't miss out on reserving your room. Lastly, keep in mind as we walk through Bowie State University every day, keep it beautiful because our residential halls and university is a representation of us, don't take it for guaranteed, love it! |
