Strong Finish ...Bulldogs End with Winning SeasonBy Emery Rudolph On Saturday the Bulldogs closed out their 2008 regular season with a 21-16 victory over the now 5-5 Virginia State Trojans. The game took place right here on campus in Bulldog Stadium, attracting a crowd of over 2,300 people. Senior Isaac Redman would once again be the star of the show with 19 carries, 103 yards, and two touchdowns. The Trojans were the first on the scoreboard after a short run by halfback Babaside Onadipe into the endzone. He had 35 carries, 144 yards, and a touchdown on the day for VSU. Kicker Justin Parker was able to tack on the extra point for the Trojans. However, this would not be able to hold them over the entire game. At the 6:45 mark in the first quarter, Redman stampeded 23 yards through the Trojan defense to put the Bulldogs on the board. Michael Gagne was able to execute the extra point which tied the game at seven. The score remained tied throughout the progression of the first period. Halfway through the second period, the crowd leaped out of their shoes as freshman wide receiver Clifton Budd returned a VSU punt for 73 yards. The extra point put the Bulldogs up by a touchdown. However, just prior to halftime the Trojans were able to execute a 27-yard field goal. This put the score at 14-10 to the Bulldogs advantage going into halftime intermission. Coming out of the half, neither the Bulldogs nor the Trojans were able to score in the third period. Despite BSU possessing the ball over 10 minutes in the quarter, they still were not able to get on the board in the period. This would all change in the final stretch of the game. The fourth quarter began with Isaac Redman scoring his second touchdown of the game after a 22-play drive by the Bulldogs. This score put them up 21-10, giving the ball back to the Trojans. They then inadvertently ate up time with a 15-play drive and only an interception to show for it. The following possession was a quick as the Bulldogs were forced to punt after just four plays. This would be the last chance for the Trojans. They received the ball with exactly three minutes left on the clock. The marched the ball down the field in seven plays and burning a little over a minute off the clock. Yet, even though they managed to do so, kicker Justin Parker could not execute the extra point. The score would be left a 21-16. The following possession, the Bulldogs simply ran out the clock to victory. They finish the season at 5-4. As usual, they will probably look to excel next season. |
