THE SPORTSZONE

We have finally begun to make the transition into the winter sports season.  Volleyball season was recently ended by Elizabeth City State and football came to a close quite a while ago.  Though the NCAA championship rounds for cross country still are pending, that is the last step before being able to say that winter season is officially underway.

Although the football season has come to an end, it would not be right without sending a special congratulation out to those players who have been honored so far.  The CIAA selected the all-conference teams and four of our Bulldogs were named to the list.  Representing Bowie State on the All-CIAA First Team are senior offensive lineman Dwayne Frost and freshman punter Michael Gagne.  Defensive back Terence Peete Jr. was selected to the All-CIAA Second Team for the Bulldogs.  Last but not least was freshman receiver Clifton Budd who was chosen for the CIAA All-Rookie Team.

The basketball season has finally kicked off and both teams as we speak are the complete opposite of each other.  The men are 2-0 coming out of the Bulldog Classic this past weekend.  At the other end, the women are 0-2 after two tough battles in the Clarion Tip-Off Classic.  They were both predicted to be at the top of the conference so I am hoping that the men keep it going and the women pull it together their upcoming games.

Of course winning streaks always have to come to an end, even if it is at my team's expense.  This past week it saddens me to say that both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Baltimore Ravens winning streaks came to an end.  For the Lakers it was at the hands of the Detroit Pistons.  This past Sunday it was a disappointing Raven's loss to the Superbowl Champion New York Giants.  I ask that everybody who reads this editorial constantly keep my teams in your prayers (lol).

One team that I cannot forget is our coed bowling team here on campus.  They are already pretty deep into their season.  The team is 15 matches into their season and stand at 13-2.  This is a squad that is always on point and consistent.  Therefore I have no worries about this team.  Already they have proved their elite stature so far in their season.  Yes, there is quite awhile to go since they play all the way up to March.  However, a 13-2 start is not bad at all and shows that they are on the right track so far.  Hopefully they show no signs of slowing down.
