THE SPORTSZONEBy Emery Rudolph Jr. For the most part, this past week was not a good look for Bulldog sports. The only triumph came from the football team. Despite losing a game to Fayetteville State University 20-30 last week, this past Saturday they pummeled Livingstone College 51-0. Yes, I repeat, 51-0. Both Rodney Webb and Ramono Flowers had over 100 yards rushing. They now stand at 2-2. Since being here at Bowie State, I have to say that was the most impressive victory I've seen yet. Their running game was stronger then ever and the defense did what a defense is supposed to do, keep the other team from scoring a single point. Now on not such a high note is the volleyball team. They now stand at 1-14. Struggling is definitely not the word at this point. When somebody finds a stronger word let me know and I'll put it in the next issue. It seems they are giving an effort but it's just not enough this season. Other teams just seem to just be more prepared and are just at the right spots at the right time. Perhaps just a bit more prepared than the Lady Bulldogs each opponent is. It's not technically over until the fat lady sings, but right now she's drawing in her breath. Good luck to you ladies. Hope you turn it around, no shade. Cross country is doing decent so far this season. Their best meet so far was definitely the Bowie State Challenge. Both the men and women placed first in the meet. They placed fourth and sixth in the Towson Invitational a week prior to that. This past week however, they placed tenth and ninth in the UMES Invitational. This was by far their lowest placing and they will look to cover at the end of this month. They will travel to Virginia Union University for a meet on Sept. 30. This week's athlete of the week is deservingly Ramono Flowers. Against Livingstone he had 10 carries, 146 yards, and 3 touchdowns. That includes a 65-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter. He absolutely punished the Blue Bears en route to the Bulldogs 51-0 shutout. Hopefully this weekend he can put on the same performance in the Prince George's Classic game vs. Shaw University. The Prince George's Classic is this weekend at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 in none other than Bulldog Stadium. Tickets are now on sale for the game. The volleyball team also has two consecutive home games coming up: Virginia State at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 and 6 p.m. on Sept. 30 against Lincoln University. Come out and support our Bulldog athletes. Especially while their on our own yard. |
