Hoop Notes BSU Men's Basketball Team Makes Run at CIAA Title By Kendall Robinson O.K. relax. The Super Bowl is over and there is no more football. O.K. I can do this. I can move on with my life. It's only a couple more months until football season again. Wait what month is it? February...hmmm...I think I found my saving grace. March is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing: The heart of the college basketball season is coming up. With that said, let's take a closer look at our Bowie State Bulldogs men's basketball program and their drive to a CIAA championship. As March continues to creep ever closer to the Bulldogs, so do their hopes and aspirations of making a deep drive in the CIAA conference tournament. And with their impressive two game home stand, it looks like they might be hitting their stride in the nick of time. The game against Saint Paul's was a prime example of the Bulldogs running at full power. Leading by only five at halftime, the Bulldogs put on a second-half show that displayed their full offensive firepower. Their transition fast break was the main catalyst in this display with numerous layups and fast break jams that fired up the crowd. A second focal point of that night was the Bulldogs' stingy defense, primarily causing 19 turnovers for the night, most of which occurred in the second half. This defense will be much needed in their push for a conference title and a chance to prove themselves in the post season. This group of dynamic players are highlighted by standout performances by sophomore Travis Hyman and junior Eric Vann who both scored 18 points each in the blowout 76-54 win over Saint Paul's. The players showed a great tenacity for play making with an above-the-rim approach that left the crowd asking for more. All in all the Bulldogs appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. The defense is coming on strong with their offense on a tear. Again March is a time for dreams, and for this year's version of the Bowie State Bulldogs there could be some big dreams on the horizon that could become reality. Then after March it's back to my countdown to August. Hey, even in March I'm still dreaming. |
