Virginia State Squeaks out Victory over Bulldogs

By Anthony Vieira Jr.

After a nice win in the home opener, the Bulldogs entered this contest with a two-game winning streak, but faced a tough test against conference leading Virginia State (5-2). The game on Oct. 2 was very hard fought, but in the end the Trojans were able to come away with the victory.

At the start of the game, Virginia State elected to receive the opened up with a 10 play- 49 yard drive. Trojans quarterback Jarred Battle scored on a one yard scramble, and the Trojans were up 7-0 early. But the Bulldogs answered with its own methodical drive, (9 plays- 51 yards) and from seven yards out. Quarterback Clifton Budd found a wide open Tariq Jones in the end zone, and the game was tied at 7 with 2:15 left in the first quarter.

The Trojans answered with a long 12 play-66 yard drive, but the Bulldogs' defense forced VSU to settle for a field goal; the lead was now 10-7 with 7:30 in the second quarter. However, the Bulldogs took the lead just before halftime, when Budd threw a 13 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Ridwan Cole. However, the point after was blocked and BSU led 13-10 at the half.

The third quarter was a weird sequence for both teams. Neither of the squads could muster any offense, and, as a result it was a scoreless series. However, Bowie State had a few golden opportunities to separate from VSU. Trojans quarterback Battle tossed three interceptions in the third quarter alone, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize on the mistakes. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs' defense continued to play well, and forced a safety on a VSU punt. With a 15-10 lead and 5:00 remaining in the game, the BSU offense looked to close out the game. The offense drained the clock down to inside 1:40, before it had to punt the football.

But unfortunately VSU came up big after a 50-yard touchdown bomb from Battle to Timothy Palk and went on to win the game 16-15. For the BSU this was a crushing defeat. But there is a silver lining in the wake of this defeat. The Bulldogs are a very well-coached and competitive team and have shown that it is more than capable of contending with the top teams.
