Bulldogs End Season on High Note By Maurice Berry All season the Bulldogs have been waiting for that big offense day, they have good ones but not that huge day. Why not do it in the last game to end out on a high note? The Bulldogs would post a season best 582 yards of total offense in a 59-19 whipping of Chowan University on Nov. 6. Bulldogs junior Clifton Budd, who has to be on the All-CIAA watch, made a closing chase. He opened his day with a 16-yard touchdown run that made it 7-0. Then he would hit senior Derrick McPhearson on a 57-yard touchdown pass that made the score 17-6. Budd went back to work in the third quarter connecting with senior Gregory Jackson on a 24-yard touchdown pass. That score pushed the lead to 24-12 in the third quarter. Someone other than Budd would get into the act in the fourth when senior Troy Gibson Jr. rushed up the middle for a 4-yard score and a 31-12 cushion. The Bulldogs' passing game went back on the attack as senior Anthony Green received his first touchdown reception of the season. Now we had a good old fashion blowout at 38-12. Now the Bulldogs wanted to have fun and send one of their great Bulldogs out on a great note. With just under 8 minutes to play, the Bulldogs gave all-conference senior free safety Sterling Green the ball on a handoff and he scored from 4 yards out. Now the score was up to 45-12. The Bulldogs would put up two more scores after that, one of them being another Budd touchdown pass for the 59-19 final. Budd finished his big day going 15-25 for 294 yards and four touchdowns while running for another. With his big day Budd set the Bulldogs' season passing record with 1,538 beating out the old mark of 1,462 by Jimmie Whitehead (1999). The Bulldogs would fall one game short of the CIAA championship game because Virginia State beat Saint Paul's. The Trojans will advance to play in the conference championship game. The Bulldogs have no reason to hang their heads. Most teams that start off 0-3 don't end up 6-4 with a 6-1 conference record. With a great returning cast of players led by Budd, the Bulldogs will be right in the mix next season. To the seniors who have given their all to the program thank you and good luck in your future endeavors. |
