The Mental Health counseling program requires each student to demonstrate the following related to knowledge:
- in-depth knowledge of three general theories of counseling and a general knowledge of at least three additional theories;
- in-depth knowledge of at least three career counseling theories in reference to educational and career development;
- knowledge of computer software and technology as it enhances and applies to school counseling;
- knowledge of commonly used individual and group intelligence tests, interest and personality inventories, aptitude batteries, achievement tests, mental hygiene instruments, and other tests and measurement devices;
- knowledge of community referral agencies and facilities;
- knowledge of the various professional counseling organizations including their legal and ethical standards;
- working knowledge of group counseling and group dynamics;
- knowledge of human development theory and research, from preschool to adulthood, that relates to educational, social, psychological, physical, and emotional growth;
- knowledge of drug use and misuse; and
- knowledge of research methodology and computer-assisted technology in the social sciences.
The Mental Health counseling program requires each student to demonstrate the following related to skills:
- responsiveness to verbal and non-verbal behavior of clients so as to facilitate the process of counseling;
- ability to identify and assess problem present by the client to formulate a counseling strategy appropriate to the client’s concerns and needs;
- appropriate use of crisis intervention strategies;
- ability to engage in parent consultation with sensitivity parental concerns;
- ability to consult with school staff on strategies used to deal with classroom behavioral problems;
- ability to engage in vocational and career counseling by assisting clients in the development of realistic career options;
- ability to use and interpret various interest inventories, aptitude tests, and other measures related to education and career choice;
- ability to respond accurately to clients from different backgrounds;
- ability to consult with staff to resolve organizational conflicts;
- ability to analyze social science research for practical application;
- ability to develop and complete a research paper;
- ability to impact on curriculum development; and
- ability to demonstrate competence in knowledge of legal and ethical issues.
The 60-credit hour program that gives students an option to complete the courses required for initial licensure in the State of Maryland as a part of a degree. In addition, this program has three field experiences that give students the maximum amount of hours accepted for pre-degree for licensure, 1000 hours. The program provides professional preparation for persons wishing to become counselors in community mental health facilities, Universities and etc. The program places great emphasis on interpersonal and helping relationships, which require considerable commitment on the part of the student.

*Candidates must have completed Levels I, II, and III and have passed the comprehensive examination before registering for these classes.**If a Candidate has not completed the experience by the end of the semester, he/she must enroll in a one (1) credit hour independent study course (PSYC 601) to complete it by the summer session).
Steps to Follow
- As can be observed, the initial course taken by all candidates is PSYC 502: Principles and Philosophy of Counseling. There are two other courses, which candidates may choose to take concurrently with this introductory course. They are: EDUC 507: Adv. Human Growth and Development and COUN 633: Multicultural Counseling. At the completion of 15 hours in the program, Candidates are required to make application for Advancement to Candidacy. The counseling faculty at this point reviews the application. If candidates have a 3.25 grade point average and are recommended by at least two members of the full-time faculty, they are advanced to candidacy in the degree program.
- At the second level, candidates may enroll in COUN 608 Career Counseling and Development, PSYC 734: Counseling Theory and Practice, COUN 731: Group Counseling, or PSYC 780: Legal and Ethical Issues in Therapy.
- At the third level, candidates may enroll in the following courses: PSYC736 Practicum in Mental Health Counseling, EDUC 706: Introduction to Research COUN 532: Family Counseling or COUN 610: Appraisal, Assessment and Evaluation. After completing the first 30 credit hours (Levels I, II, and III) in the program, each candidate is eligible to take the three-hour written Comprehensive/Qualifying Examination. The examination is designed to assess candidates’ mastery of the program objectives.
- At the fourth level, candidates may enroll in PSYC 544: Psychodynamics of Psychopathology I (DSM-IV-TR) or PSYC714 Clinical Assessment in Counseling Psychology (DSM-IV-TR), PSYC775 Psychopharmacology or PSYC861 Seminar in Counseling Psychology, and take an elective.
- At the fifth level, candidates may enroll in COUN 762 Drug and Alcohol Counseling or PSYC833 Advanced Techniques in Psychotherapy and take an elective. (Note: Candidates may not enroll in these fourth-level courses until they have completed courses in Levels I, II, and III and passed the Comprehensive Examination. These courses are not offered during the summer).
- At level six, candidates must take PSYC858a and PSYC858b Internship in Mental Health Counseling and Counseling.
