DFPA Spring Arts Festival 2009: A NEW ARTS ERA AT BOWIE STATE

Description:

The week of April 13-18th, 2009 marks our DFPA Annual Spring Arts Festival. The DFPA is planning a week of events including a student art exhibition, independent film screenings, guest lectures, artist talks, dance, theatrical and musical performances; including Songs of Nommo, Sizwe Banzi is Dead, a portfolio review and career day (Reality Check) in the areas of art, design, entertainment business and multimedia for students, sponsored by Computer Graphics (VCDMA) & FocusOnDesign. Slated are special presentations by invited guests artists and professional designers, artists and art directors. All of these events are open to the public, campus community and free (with the exception of theatrical performances).

This year includes a special lecture by artist Sam Gilliam , kente weaving, and salsa workshops and more. Jeff Henriquez (who is renowned for his "live" and improvisational painting)  returns to lead a workshop in live/improvisational painting, and participate in AUDIOVISION III:  ALTSOUL/HIPHOPE. 

This has become a welcomed artistic tradition and is special for this semester due to a unique event titled, AUDIOVISION III:  and ALTSOUL/HIPHOPE. This is truly an interdisciplinary experience that will feature performance/exhibition(s) lead by Prof. Tewodross Melchishua and Jeff Henriquez. Also included in this event will be DFPA students in art, computer graphics art  (visual communication) music technology, theatre arts (dance).

This year, all visual artists will collaborate with professional musicians/performers Bilal Salaam , Bless Roxwell and Jah-I-Witness . Artists will explore hip-hop, soul, neo-soul and through creative collaboration and technology will create works of art/performance that will explore the connection between music, dance, poetry/rhyme and the visual arts. This is the 3rd year for AUDIOVISON will take place this year (if weather permits) outside, in front of MLK with these invited performers.

Independent and student films, including short and documentary films will be screened, such as “I AM SEAN BELL, black boys speak” is a short form documentary that highlights the voices of young black boys between the ages of 11 and 13 years old growing up in New York City, directed by Stacey Muhammad . Also there will be the screening of  a moving documentary about Black and Latino youth and the HIV/AIDS epidemic,  "America's Shadows" directed by Tchaiko Omawale.

Also performing will be the BSU Concert & Jazz Bands, the BSU Gospel, University Choirs and students in Theatre Arts will also offer mid-day performances and entertainment. The DFPA Spring Arts Festival promises to be a wonderful blossoming of creativity, fun and family and we invite the BSU community to come and support our students and these events.
