The fastest growing areas of employment have been computer-related. As the world moves increasingly into the information age, many new professionals will be needed to apply computer and information technology to solve business problems and to seize opportunities in the marketplace.

The BUIS concentration is designed to provide students the tools and enhance their background in order to participate and excel in this exciting field. The emphasis of the concentration is on the application of information systems and technology as well as on the study of technology in general. Students who specialize in business information systems can work in the following exciting positions and more:

Program Goal

The business information systems concentration is designed to teach students in-depth skills that will enable them to develop and manage computer-based information systems. The concentration will prepare the student to be an effective communication link between the functional area managers and computer specialists in an organization and in the business world.

The BUIS concentration will provide the analytical framework and the methodologies to analyze, design, implement, and manage complex information systems. It will also place emphasis on fundamental skills that will be directed toward developing critical thinking, verbal and written communication, and organizational planning.

Program Learning Goals

1.1 Conduct research and evaluate information using the appropriate methods of the discipline

1.2 Document knowledge gained from research using the APA format and Style Guide

1.3 Create documents using word processing software

2.1 Analyze and discuss critical and emerging technological issues in information systems management

2.2 Produce graphical and visual presentations of data using presentation software

2.3 Orally demonstrate in class knowledge gained from research paper

3.1 Apply skills in analysis, synthesis and problem solving

3.2 Create and use Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) to design the architectures and structures of database systems

3.3 Define and create queries to sort, categorize, organize, search and retrieve data from a database management system

3.4 Analyze data using What-ifs and Pivot Tables using spreadsheet software

4.1 Identify the major issues associated with the design and implementation of information systems in a global business environment

4.2 Identify the cultural, political, and geoeconomic challenges that confront managers in the management of global information technologies

4.3 Understand the fundamental concepts of outsourcing and offshoring information technologies and information systems

5.1 Complete the appropriate MFT during the final semester of their senior year
