Barbara Smith is currently the Chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Professional Development at Bowie State University. She is responsible for faculty development, staff supervision, budget management and the review and assessment of all undergraduate and graduate programs in the department. She has served as the undergraduate coordinator of Human Services, coordinator of Elementary education, Director of Student Teaching, assistant to the department char for undergraduate programs and acting department chair. Some of her other responsibilities include serving on the Commencement Committee, Homecoming, Founders Day, Black History Convocation, Chair of the Elections Committee, served on the Dean's Search Committee, served on the Provost Search Committee, coordinator of the Academy for Future Educators and the advisor of the Maryland State Teachers Association Education Club at Bowie State University. Professor Smith is a member of several professional organizations: American Association of University Women, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the National Education Association Higher Education Council and the Maryland State Teachers Association. In 2002, she received the District of Columbia Mayor's Committee on Persons with Disabilities Andrew Wood Advocacy Award for her work with the Special Needs Ministry at Mount Airy Baptist Church and in March 2005 she received the Chair's Training Award from the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.
