We continue to develop our gift program with the specific aim of enriching our research and special collections. Gifts donated must be consistent with the University's academic programs or be unique in character and have intrinsic value. Here is more information on making a gift to the Thurgood Marshall Library: - Anyone interested in donating materials to the library should contact the Acquisitions Department at 301-860-3859
- Donors offering materials in areas of special interest to particular subject collections will be referred to the appropriate liaison for further consultation. Gifts of rare books, manuscripts, and other special items should be referred to the dean of the library at 301-860-3850.
- The donor is responsible for supplying the library with a list of all materials donated. The list should consist of author and title.
- When the library accepts materials from donors, it is with the understanding that it is accepted for review. Library staff reviews all gifts for suitability for our collections and disposes of unwanted gifts as appropriate, unless other specific arrangements have been made with donors. Books not added to the collection may be offered to the Thurgood Marshall Library's annual Book Give Away Week.
- Letters acknowledging the gift and providing a count of donations without evaluation or value indicated are provided to donors. Copies of these letters are maintained in the Acquisitions Department, Library Administration Office, and External Affairs. In order to receive a letter of acknowledgment, donors must leave a name, address, telephone number, or email address. According to U.S. tax regulations, the library, as the recipient, cannot appraise gifts for tax purposes.
- Acceptance for review of unsolicited and general gifts offered will be carefully screened by Collections Management.
Each year the Thurgood Marshall Library sponsors a Welcome Back to School/Book Give Away Week. The event falls on the first week of classes and runs the entire week. All donated resources, duplicate copies, and resources deselected from the collection are available for students, faculty, staff, or community guests.
