OVERVIEW

The Serials/Periodical Department is responsible for all functions related to obtaining and making periodicals available, including: receiving, processing, claiming, assisting in preparing invoices for the business office, binding, shelving, holdings lists (alphabetical and subject), title changes, physical weeding, shifting, and maintaining holding records in the library's online USMAI catalog.

Serials include journals, magazines, newspapers, yearbooks, e-journals, and series. Serials are also available in microform format. Periodicals is a general term used to describe publications that are issued at regular intervals (i.e., weekly, monthly, and quarterly).

To find individual articles in a periodical, use a periodical index. This is a searchable database of articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers. The majority of our indexes are available online via Research Port, and a listing can be viewed though the library's USMAI online catalog or by selecting "journals" in the menu bar.

All periodicals (i.e., paper format, bound, and microform-microfilm cabinets) are located on the main floor of the library alphabetically. Keep in mind if a title is abbreviated, it will be located at the beginning of its alphabetical designation (e.g., ABNF Journal: Association of the Black Nursing Faculty).

Periodicals do not circulate, which means they cannot be checked out of the library. They can be taken and used anywhere on the main and second floor of the library. Photocopiers are available on the first floor of the library and the cost for photocopying is ten cents per page. U.S. copyright law governs the photocopying of materials.

SERIALS/PERIODICAL RECOMMENDATIONS REQUEST

All requests for new titles can be submitted on the library's Resources Request Form and will be forwarded to Margaret Cameron-Gross. All serials/periodicals recommendations and requests are reviewed by the head of collection development before purchase.

The Serials Department enters orders with our print subscription vendor, EBSCO Information Services for previous and new titles that have been approved for purchase. This process occurs throughout the summer, and ends in October of each academic year. Any new serials/periodicals recommendations and requests received afterward will be approved and purchased the following academic year. Journals on microfilm are approved and purchased from National Archive Publishing Company (NAPC).
