Advancement to Candidacy is a requirement of all graduate programs at Bowie State University.  The process was implemented to assess a student's ability to conduct and handle graduate level courses.  The basic requirement of Advancement to Candidacy is to achieve a grade point average of 3.25 on the 4 point scale after completing 12, 15, or 18 credits of study in the Program of Study, not including pre-requisites.

Some degree programs require additional requirements beyond the grade point average.  Please refer to the program for additional requirements.

Bowie State University Peoplesoft system will place a hold on the graduate student's account.  Student who will complete 12 - 18 credits by the end of the semester will get a negative service indicator that will prohibit registration if registration has not been achieved.  The hold will be removed once the Office of the Registrar receives an application and has certified advancement has been reached.  The Office of Graduate Studies has the access to remove the holds.

If you are denied Advancement to Candidacy, you will be notified by mail to see your academic advisor to implement an approach to meet Advancement.  This plan will be reported to the Office of Graduate Studies on the Academic Progression Plan Worksheet.  A copy will be sent to the Office of the Registrar for placement in the student's folder.  The hold will be temporarily removed to allow for registration.  Upon completion of registration, the hold will be placed back on the student record in order to continue monitoring the student's progress. Once the student has successfully achieved Advancement to Candidacy the hold will be removed permanently.

Student must fill out an application for Advancement to Candidacy.  This form certifies that a student has completed departmental requirements for Candidacy.  When The Office of Registrar receives your Advancement to Candidacy Form, your academic record is reviewed to determine if you met the minimum academic requirements.  Once that information has been verified and the Candidacy process has been completed, you will be able to see it on your unofficial transcript on Bulldog Connection.

Students must Advance to Candidacy before taking the Comprehensive Examination, Seminar, Practicum or Internship.
