What is Summer Smash?

Summer Smash prepares students for university-level course work by providing individual and group instruction in reading/writing and/or mathematics. Tailored to participants’ needs, this intensive program cultivates the academic and study skills necessary for success, builds confidence, and offers a head start on college.  Students who successfully complete this program may be eligible to advance into college-level writing and math courses.

What are Developmental Courses? 

Students whose placement test scores indicate a deficiency in the areas of reading, writing, and/or mathematics are encouraged to take developmental courses. Developmental courses are designed to strengthen students’ basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics so that students can cope more successfully with college-level work. However, credit hours earned from developmental courses are not included in the tabulation of total credit hours required for graduation. In other words, students are required to pay tuition for developmental courses, but the credits don’t count towards the degree, potentially delaying graduation. The additional time and money spent on developmental courses can become a burden for students and their families. After completing Summer Smash, students will retake the University’s placement test, which will improve their chances of avoiding developmental courses.

Who Can Participate? 

Summer Smash is open to those students whose placement test results indicate a need for instruction in developmental reading, writing, or math and would otherwise have to complete one or more of the following developmental courses: Reading 100, English 100, Math 099.

Dates, Time, and Location

Reading/ Writing: July 6 - August 21

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday

Math: July 22 - August 21

1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday

Recognition Ceremony August 21
