One of the questions we get asked is this: "Why can't TRIO/SSS serve every student at Bowie State University?" Of course, one of the answers to this question is that we have limited staff and resources. But the primary answer is that since SSS is funded with federal grant funds, the regulations that go along with those funds must be followed.
The grant regulations state that the SSS program must provide services to a limited number of students who are first-generation students, low-income students, and/or have a documented disability. A specified percentage of SSS students must be BOTH low-income and first-generation students. Other restrictions on SSS funds apply as well.
If the terms of the agreement or regulations under which the SSS grant is received were violated, the University could lose ALL of the funds.
If you are a TRIO Achiever, be sure to use the services that are available to you! Others may be on the waiting list who would like to be a part of the program, and we intend to serve as many students as possible.
The legislation and regulations that apply to the SSS program can be found on the U.S. Department of Education's website.
