Karen Harris Carter, a native Washingtonian, was born at Walter Reed Hospital. She grew up in Hyattsville, in Prince Georges County, and graduated from High Point Senior High School in Beltsville, MD. She went on to further her studies at Bowie State University, where she earned her BS in public administration in 1986.
Presently, Karen is employed at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, as a senior human resources generalist. Her experience in the area of human resources management has spanned over 17 years. She has served in similar capacities at Bon Secours Richmond Health System in Richmond, VA, Radford University in Radford, VA, Greater Southeast Healthcare System in Washington, DC, Capitol Hill Hospital in Washington, DC, and Signet Bank in Washington, DC.
Karen is married to BSU Athletics Director, Derek Carter. They have one son, Bryce Anthony Carter. Karen is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., (former member of Prince George's Alumnae in Maryland and Chesterfield Alumnae in Richmond, VA). Her special interest includes spending time with family, cooking, and reading. She has an appreciation for jazz and rhythm and blues and is a big fan of Frankie Beverly and Maze. In addition, Karen is interested in sports, saying, "My husband's career has given me a ‘new found' interest in sports."
