BSU camp exposes middle schoolers to science careers

Local middle school students will explore career possibilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and conduct hands-on experiments in a free residential summer science camp at Bowie State University from July 14-25.

U.S. Representative Donna Edwards (MD-4) visited Bowie State’s specialized research programs this week, and spoke with faculty and students, as part of her tour of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs at historically Black colleges and universities. She is using the tour to learn about science and technology programs at the HBCUs and how best to engage women and minorities in STEM fields. Edwards visited with the following faculty and programs at Bowie: Dr. Clarence Ray (Education Innovation Initiative, or EI2); Dr. Sharad Sharma (virtual reality lab); Dr. Quincy Brown (mobile apps research); Dr. Bradford Braden (protein crystallography), Dr. George Ude (genomics lab); and Drs. Alan Anderson and Eric Bonsu (medicinal chemistry).

Tewodross Melchishua, associate professor and coordinator of the visual communications and digital media arts program, will work as a video designer for two multimedia productions in the Kennedy Center’s “One Mic: Hip-Hop Culture Worldwide” festival, which runs from March 25 - April 13. The two performances are “Liner Notes,” a multimedia expression of hip-hop’s past and present, and “Hip-Hop in the Pocket,” a celebration of the relationship between go-go music and hip-hop. Both shows will be performed free at the Millennium Stage.
