A world-renowned Nigerian artist led a master class workshop in the art of batik and the granddaughter of Bob and Rita Marley shared her experience developing a documentary film in two separate events last week in the Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Experts share best practices at domestic violence conference

Last week’s Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence Conference, hosted by the Department of Social Work, drew more than 300 BSU students and 160 local human services professionals. Sponsored by Verizon, the event included workshops and panel discussions from expert speakers about best practices in preventing domestic and partner violence and treating those who have committed acts of domestic violence.

Samuel Cuffee, a junior criminal justice major, shared his experience with the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant program, known as D.C. TAG, at a roundtable discussion at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., convened by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). D.C. TAG is a grant program that allows city residents to attend any public institution in the nation as if they are a resident of the school’s state. The panel, comprised of people directly impacted by the program, was designed to gain congressional support for the program.

President Mickey L. Burnim, will discuss the impact of higher education as part of a panel at the 2014 Leadership Prince George’s Education Day on Wednesday, April 9. Leadership Prince George’s supports leaders in refining their skills, expanding professional networks and taking action to effectively embrace opportunities and meet challenges facing the county.

Valencia McClure, director of communications/corporate relations for BGE, was appointed to the Bowie State University Foundation Board. BGE has pledged to donate $10,000 to the university in support of the Founder’s Day Gala. In her role at BGE, McClure is responsible for media relations, employee communications and corporate relations. The BSU Foundation’s mission is to facilitate fundraising efforts that seek from private sources contributions in support of the activities and mission of the university.

Dr. Frederick Mills, professor of philosophy, was interviewed as an expert on Venezuelan and Salvadorian politics on Univision’s “Perspectiva Nacional” show, Hot 102 FM’s “Jamaica Speaks” in Kingston, Jamaica and Channel France 24’s “International News” in Paris, France.
